Excellent story line and lovely pictures! Educators and parents are constantly on the lookout for ways to enourage a positive self image in youngsters. This book does that. I liked the author's explanaton
about the whole family being involved in tending their wealth-the sheep!
Just the kind of story our little ones (both girls and boys)need to help them relate to the Christmas story!

Reading while on the throne. . . and the thoughts that come

Awesome book. Every household with a bathroom where there's a reader who visits... Well, this is a perfect book to add to your decor, an item to be used when paying a visit to the WC. A friend of mine loaned this book to me back when it was first published. Julie L. Horan was a flight attendant who flew all over the world. Of course, where ever she went, there were toilets there to use. Thus, began her curiosity. Book is full of interesting tidbits about this place and that, times being the ancient and the modern.

"Porcelain God" has lots of minute details that you'll really want to know about one of our most frequently used tools. Without the toilet in the house, our backyards would be quite unsightly and unsanitary. In fact, I've always wondered how one can be allowed to build something without a toilet, a sewer and a way for it to be composted... Well, thus, we have nuclear power plants, but then that's another whole tale, did you get it? No storage for the waste... Back to the "The Porcelain God: A Social History of the Toilet".

Believe me, if you've never been curious about how we got toilets, then you're not really a deep thinker. This book has all the answers to your questions, presented in an entertaining fashion and told by a woman who just couldn't seem to get enough information about her subject.

Here's one thing that book did to me: It made me begin to shut the lid on my toilet after every use. I tell people it's because in an earthquake I don't want all the items above the toilet on a shelf to fall into the tank, actually true. If things come back to life after the quake, the last thing you want to be doing is shopping for a toilet with everyone else. No, it's the info she gives you about how high the water rises up above and how long that continues after you've flushed the toilet. Not something I'd ever pondered before her book.

The two plus two equals four here is: If you allow the water spray from the toilet to come back into your room, then how sanitary is the air in your bathroom? Hmmm... something to ponder... deeply... Yes, I'll recommend this book to every one. In fact, I just purchased a copy of this book for a family member who I know is about to do some travels. Thought it would be a good time to begin learning about the toilets of the world... and what the water spray really means to them.

I meant to mention that this book is one of my favorite history books. The writer has a clear style with humorous overtones ~ after all, look at her chosen subject. She takes you all over the world and all through the ages in an entertaining fashion. So, if you're looking for a good read with real facts presented in an easy to read format, here's a book you should not pass up.

I suppose that if you are new to statistics and want an overview of how to approach (operative word here) of multivariate data analysis, then this is an ok book. Don't expect a bunch of examples or extreme theory. It's more of an overview of various tasks, nothing more.

Bernhard Maidl has been Professor for Civil Engineering, Tunneling and Construction at the Ruhr-Universit�t in Bochum since 1974. In 1979 he founded the engineering firm Maidl und Maidl in Bochum, which is involved in many large and complex tunnel projects in Germany and abroad.
Dr. Herrenknecht is the Founder and Chairman of the world's leading mechanized shield tunneling company.
Leonhard Schmid is a planner of tunneling projects and manager of a Swiss engineering firm.
Willy Ritz was formerly manager of a tunneling company in Switzerland and has a great deal of experience in the construction sector.

This reverts to the stile of the Alice and Captives of Cheyner Close with a rather entertaining robot rape to start. Some good humor and erotica. Not as well written as the Alice books though. Some BDSM, Ds and MS as well a F/F erotica.

Written a century ago but still relevant

What's amazing about this book is that it was written a century ago but is still relevant today. Much of what he discussed about the Philippines on the hassles in starting new enterprise, on the church owning large tracks of land, and on how the natives are perceived to be indolent, are still relevant today. Although I believe the last one is starting to no longer be true, as all the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) stationed the world over, have shown how industrious the Filipinos are.

The book is free and is a classic written by a national hero. It only has 5 chapters so you can finish in less than a few hours. A must-read for all Filipinos.

A worthwhile read

Although this probably isn't of interest to most Americans, it is a worthwhile read
for those with an interest in history and culture of The Philippines.

This is a short read, very very scholarly, and should be read along with
some of the author's other works and relevant history of the time.

El Filibusteriso (The Filibuster) by the same author is superb.

Anyone who loves politics, history, culture, wants to understand the world
should read some jose Rizal. He paid for his ideas with his life.

analysis of Philippine culture

Having grown up in the Philippines, I find that this entire literary work resonates with me. If he could see where the country is at now, I think Rizal would be pleased to see that, in many ways, we have broken free of the shackles imposed on us by the atrocious Spanish colonial rule. I think he would be sad to see that many of its effects (corruption, e..) still permeate life in the country. He would also be sad to see that this has resulted in a continual exodus of talent out of the country, to places where hard work and honesty are rewarded. Though written over 100 years ago, his analysis of what ails Philippine culture is still relevant. Considering the social and political climate in which this work was written, one can only marvel at Rizal's courage. As another reviewer noted, Rizal sought to awaken the minds and hearts of his countrymen to their natural rights, at the price of his life.
A more mundane aspect of this review-the kindle version is rife with typos, making it hard to read in some places. This is aggravated by the fact that this work is written in the language and style of its time and so discerning what the "mistyped" (more likely, misrecognized, if OCR software was used) word originally was may be challenging. Still, I am grateful that I was able to read it for free. Not complaining.

Fantastic and emotional intrigue

I devoured it! The translation into Spanish surely probably helped to read this rhythmic and full of tension novel from beginning to end. Patrick Modiano organizes the timeline in a masterly way, so that the reader can rearrange the thriller when he reaches the end of the story. The first-person narrative is very successful and makes a strong connection with the reader from the very beginning.
I would have given everything to read it in French...

A very different post apocalyptic novel!

This is definitely an epic book! Even though it’s long it’s a very fast read. What’s it about? Well just imagine when all of a sudden all the old pagan gods like the Aztec gods, the Babylonian gods and the old European gods and the others suddenly reveal themselves and start carving up sections of the world for their own territories. The different nations of the world are being destroyed from within since their military units cannot defeat these gods and their servants like demons and witches and stuff. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger so it’s hard to stop reading it because you want to know what happens next. There are many main characters like Dr. Dane the professor of mythology, Detective Valerie from the NYPD and Patrick Gyle the CIA soldier and the two kids:Tara, who is a teen runway from Arizona and Ilya an orphan from Russia. There’s lots of other minor characters too but it’s a pretty easy read so you won’t to get confused because each chapter is almost a self contained story. I can’t wait for the second book to come out!

I want to start by saying I love this cover! It drew me in right away. The beginning of the book however was a bit more of a challenge for me. There was a lot of skipping around which can work but it was a bit hard for me. It was a very tough book to read at points due to the violence and racial slurs but for someone like me it didn't slow me down to much. However if you are squeamish this book may not be to your liking. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend for apocalypse book fans.

What a fantastic read ....fell in love with all the characters , especially Tara and Ilya...they are so adventurous...the storyline kept me turning page after page...I really enjoyed the characters of Paul and Valeria....great story about the Old Gods rising and causing havoc upon Earth and all the people...loved it
