Fascinating, brilliant. A must-read for fans of historical novels.

It was an immense pleasure to become acquainted with Catherine the Great in Eva Marten’s most recent book, “An Empress on the Throne of Russia”.
Martens, herself an historian, has cleverly intertwined historical facts with the very personal accounts of Catherine’s life. The historical context at the time was most satisfyingly portrayed by the court’s various Russian advisors and particularly by the Envoys. Each one sent to represent their sovereign’s own interest contributes his own perspective and his own understanding of the situation. As a reader we become familiar with these numerous points of view, making the narrative more three-dimensional.
At the same time, Martens does much justice to Catherine’s personal story. For she was obviously not an icy intellectual, or even some wanton harlot – as some historians would have us believe – but a woman with passions, needs, and who despite her “God-given” power as an Empress on occasion had to deal with human feelings of vulnerability. The passionate bed-scenes were managed skillfully and left enough but not too much up to the reader’s imagination.
The style is light, clever, entertaining and humorous, full of fascinating observations and sometimes very tongue-in-cheek. The narrative never loses its momentum, moving along at a fair pace - a real page-turner.
All in all – “An Empress on the Throne of Russia” is an intelligent and fascinating read.
Reluctantly, we part from Catherine when she is a middle-aged woman. But how did she spend the last two decades of her life? Let us hope Martens lets us know.

A Rich and Rewarding Historical Novel

Eva Martens has written a riveting account of the middle years of Catherine the Great. A worthy successor to her gem of a novel, "A Princess at the Court of Russia," it can also be read and enjoyed independently.
Although clearly intimately acquainted with Catherine's history, the author has chosen not to approach her subject straight-on, but through the perspectives of several figures close to the monarch. What emerges is a kind of kaleidoscopic portrait that despite constant shifts in perspective consistently succeeds in holding and piquing the reader's interest. Instead of dry historical treatises, we are treated to glimpses behind doors that would of necessity have remained closed, access to the flow of gossip and intrigue that would have remained hidden to any single observer at the time. While no previous knowledge of Catherine is required to appreciate the novel, even experts on the period will enjoy the imaginative re-creation of her life and times.
Equal parts informative and entertaining -- like the gossipy life of the court it depicts -- "An Empress on the Throne of Russia" is highly recommended to fans of historical fiction as well as great storytelling.

A Good Look at Catherine's Early Life

I have read several biographies of Catherine, but this one fleshes out her character a bit more than the rest and also doesn't fail to explore her "downside". I enjoyed the book more than some other biographies.

Tamal Krishna Goswami claims that the social scientific, philosophical, and 'insider' forms of investigation previously applied have failed to explain the presence of a powerful interpretative device-a mahavakya or 'great utterance'-that governs and pervades Prabhupada's 'living theology' of devotion on bhakti. For Prabhupada, the wide range of 'vedic' subject matter is governed by the axiomatic truth: Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Goswami's academic training at the University of Cambridge, his thirty years' experience as a practitioner and teacher, and his extensive interactions with Prabhupada as both personal secretary and managerial representative, afforded him a unique opportunity to understand and illuminate the theological contribution of Prabhupada. In this work, Goswami proves that the voice of the scholar-practitioner can be intimately connected with his tradition while sustaining a mature critical stance relative to his subject. A Living Theology of Krishna Bhakti includes a critical introduction and conclusion by Graham M. Schweig.

About the Author

Tamal Krishna Goswami was one of the closest and most influential disciples of the founder of the Hare Krisna Movement. Before his untimely death in 2002 at the age of 56, he became a student of religion and theology at the University of Cambridge. This volume comprises the five chapters of Goswami's near-complete doctoral thesis.

Graham M. Schweig is Professor of Religious Studies and Director of the Asian Studies Program at Christopher Newport University of Virginia. He received his doctorate in comparative religion from Harvard University. Among his publications are Dance of Divine Love: The Rasa Lila of Krishna from the Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita: The Beloved Lord's Secret Love Song.

Okay Book, room for improvement

This book should be re-titled "...An introduction to WESTERN philosophy."
It barely scratches the surface of Eastern ideologies. Not to mention African. Doesn't mention female philosophers besides mother Teresa. Many type-o's i.e "yinG-yang"

A little bit pricey for what it offers, most concepts can be learned for free online with videos or even sites like wikepedia.

decoder ring needed

this book does not give you step by step instructions, it gives the sequence of key strokes and or mouse chick backward.
for instance: choose the new tool from the launch panel of the get started tab in the ribbon bar.
when learning new software, decoding the instructions should not part of the process.

Gr 7-10-This book picks up in the weeks after the shocking events at the end of The Compound (Feiwel & Friends, 2008) and basically recounts the fallout of the family members' escape from the compound, where they were locked away for six years, and the death of its brilliant but unstable patriarch. Justifiably shell-shocked, most of the Yanakakis clan, believing the world as they knew it has fallen, concentrate on shielding themselves from the intrusive media and survival nuts who want to know their story. Pages are devoted to them settling in to a new home, but nothing much really happens. Eli has been reunited with his twin, who avoided imprisonment at the faked Armageddon, and the narrative reveals what everyone eats and wears, and how they pass the time. Mom is furious that her husband's henchman, Phil, is in charge of YK Industries until the boys become 25, and they go to the company to make a show of interest. Eli randomly picks from many charitable involvements a folder detailing the Progeria Institute's grants and demands a visit to the facility. Lackluster plot elements are thrown in: an adopted older sister's interest in her birth parents; trips to Costco, a Mariner's game, and the aquarium; stomach flu; and people posting online with sightings of them. None is particularly compelling. In this follow-up to The Compound (2008), Eli, his mother, and his siblings have been reunited with his twin and their grandmother after spending 2,000 days believing their world had been obliterated by nuclear attack. It was a lie, one of many told by Eli’s brilliant but amoral father. Now, while trying to deal with the fallout (so to speak), Eli comes to believe that the horrors may not be over and that his father is still alive and hatching his next plan to control both his family and the world. Eli’s first-person narration increases the immediacy of this standalone psychological thriller. Though the prose can be didactic, the emotion and pacing are realistic, and Bodeen does a fine job conveying the characters’ paranoia and readjustment while living in the public eye after a sensational media event. Hints that the mad-scientist father is still on the loose, and enough action to offset the introspection, should make this appealing for a wide readership. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

This Book Can Be Enjoyed By People Of All Ages

The Fallout is the sequel to The Compound. Now that Eli and his family are out of the compound, they find themselves in the spotlight. Eli is having a hard time adjusting to the outside world. People keep hounding them and he believes that someone is following them. It’s also clear that his father’s former advisor is still in control and that the experiment might not be over.

First things first, you will want to read The Compound before you start The Fallout. Although there is a lot of review of what happened, you are going to miss the bigger picture. From there, The Fallout has a slower pace and is more about the family. It’s so hard to watch Eli’s twin arguing about their father and what he did. You can see bother sides to the story and it’s hard to see the family fighting over this.

I think this is a good sequel. I can’t even begin to imagine everything Eli and his family are going through trying to adjust and being the center of media attention. Then to find that getting out of the Compound was just the beginning. Yes, this is a great book that many that like the dystopian stories will want to read. This book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

An Intense Fast Read

I didn't read book one in this series and was curious to see if The Fallout could stand on its own. And it did.

I didn't feel at a disadvantage when reading this one. There's enough of a recap of the first book that I felt up to speed and I got the impression that, with the first book simply as background, the new book has significantly different plot elements to it.

Now, this is a little teen angsty. While I liked Eli, he felt a bit younger than he was supposed to be. Now, while that could be attributed to his time in the Compound, I expected a bit more maturity after everything he had seen and been through. I actually found myself liking and sympathizing a bit more with his brother.

The book is a fast read. It's pretty intense, but you do need to suspend your sense of disbelief on more than one occasion.

After reading this one, I have decided to go back and read the first one - not because I felt like I was missing something, but just because I'm curious to see how it all started.

Excellent conclusion to an awesome storyline

S.A. Bodeen is one of those hit or miss authors, who comes up with original -- and sometimes unimaginable -- plots and twists. I don't like all of S.A. Bodeen's books, but I did love The Compound and was especially excited to hear about The Fallout. While not quite as edge-of-your-seat as The Compound, The Fallout touches on the aftermath of Eli's life, after he and his family escape from their underground prison. They experience a few natural obstacles, like working out what happens to the family's fortune now that the family's 6 year death has been reversed. There is Phil to deal with. He is the father's assistant, who helped plot the underground experiment/imprisonment but still seems to be in charge of the family business. Then there is the media and the public, following the family everywhere, forcing them into yet another imprisonment trying to maintain their privacy. In addition to the family having to adjust, Eli's twin brother, who was rendered an orphan and only child after the "death" 6 years ago, has to readjust to having not only his mother and 3 siblings back, but an additional 4 babies. He also has good memories of his father and Phil, so he and Eli are conflicted between who is good and who is evil and who is trustworthy.

As is in the S.A. Bodeen fashion, there is a crazy twist toward the end that will either have you gasping in surprise....or maybe just rolling your eyes, going "Right. Of course." Either way, I thought it was a great sequel. I hope there are no more, though. The story is done and done well and any others might ruin it.

About the Author
Patrick Frank first taught the history of Latin American modern art in a university context in 1995. He is the author of several books and articles on the subject, focusing especially on graphic art and art in Argentina. He is also the author or coauthor of two widely used introductory textbooks on art.

Great introduction to art

I just puchased the latest edition of Artforms which includes the CD-ROM with interactive explanations on elements of art. Artforms is a great introduction to art and art history for those who have always wanted to understand how to look at art and interpret it for themselves. Over half the book is dedicated to elements and principles of art and craftsmanship. I use this book in training my art museum volunteers so that they have a clear understanding of why some works of art have strong visual impact while others do not. I like how the book uses a mix of artwork from various time periods, media and cultures to explain the elements and principles. Far too many art/art history books become a history of painting, and Artforms represents a variety of art forms other than 2D. The history portion of the book is a gloss of art history, but good enough for someone just delving into art. The book is easy to read, relatively jargon-free and has a nice glossary at the end. I wish the CD had more information on it that you could use in a classroom setting, projecting it on an overhead, but that is my instructor point of view. For someone studying at home it is quite nice. To sum up, the book is so good I now own two editions and will continue to recommend it to people who want to understand how to look at art.

Wrong edition

I bought this book, and the accompanying ArtNotes, as a textbook. It is, however, an old edition of the book that has been superseded. The new edition - the one assigned for the course - is the 9th edition, not the 8th. If you're buying this book for your personal use, fine, but if it is for coursework, don't. I am quite disappointed in Amazon. Next time, I buy at the college bookstore. A rating is required. My rating is not of the book, but of Amazon's performance.
