This is my 11 year old's favorite calligraphy book. He initially borrowed from the local library, and after three times, I decided to get him the book to keep. Even though this book is not new, but the condition is very good.

Sometimes Deep Global Vision Can Be Fun

If I could start first with a regret, it is that I read the books of Ruchir Sharma in the wrong order.

I first discovered "The Rise and Fall of Nations" which was published a few years later, and enjoyed it enough to see what else Ruchir had written. Global economics is one of my particular topics of interest, and there is no better source than the Chief Global Strategist at Morgan Stanley.

He writes with a very crisp, colorful style, though I felt it was more developed in his later work. Breakout Nations is most of what I had expected in a precursor to that book.

If there is anything that the modern reader-- five-years-plus after publication-- should be impressed by, it's the conclusions drawn in this book. It was written before commodity prices collapsed, before Brazil's economic crisis, before the inevitable stuttering of Russia, but this book anticipated it all. Sharma clearly knows what to look for in potential breakout nations.

interesting book

An interesting book by Indian born economist Ruchir Sharma, the head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley on which emerging countries he believes will be able to break out on the new few years.

Sharma is bearish on Thailand (too much political instability – this was written before the recent coup), Malaysia (the government is increasingly hostile to market mechanisms), Taiwan (the economy is centered on the export of a few products, like computer components, in which companies don’t have a lot of market power), Mexico (the economy is in the hand of just a few businessmen, more interested in gaining rents than in generating genuine growth), Brazil (there is still a lot of macroeconomic instability and the country has not invested in the infrastructure needed for future growth), Russia (based on natural resources and dominated by oligarchs) and South Africa (the economy is too regulated, and too much of its wealth is concentrated in too few white hands). In the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, he likes the future prospects of Poland and the Czech Republic over that of Hungary. He thinks China has already consumed all the low hanging fruit and will be growing at more normal rates in the future. Regarding Vietnam, while admitting the recent years have seen large economic growth, he doubts the country will be able to turn into a second China (its education system is poor and its politicians are less able than the Chinese). India needs to tackle crony capitalism if it wants to pursue a sustained path of high economic growth.

He is optimistic about South Korea (almost the only country, except some oil producers, that have graduated from a poor to a rich economy in the recent decades), Turkey (he praises president Erdogan for leaving behind the long conflict between the secular military and the Islamic masses), Philippines (he believes the new government will be able to put forward reform), Indonesia (among the best run nations of Southeast Asia) and Sri Lanka (now that the long civil war is finally over, he believes the economy will be able to grow).

Sharma believes that as the decade-long commodities boom winds down, the big winner will be the Western world, who will have to pay less for the commodities it buys and especially the United States, who remains at the frontier of new technological products. If you read regularly the world economic news, you won’t be reading here something terribly new, but it is an interesting read nonetheless.

Provides an interesting view

I enjoyed this book and the view it presents. It is a a very nice walk through of a large number of countries. The data in it might be a little dated as the main book is from 2010, but it ends with an update. I think more importantly than the current data is the thought process that he applies. He tries to show how to use it consistently across countries to understand the macro setting and how it impacts the chance of a country wide breakthrough.

Two caveats on my rating. First, much of the analysis and framework in the book is presented as being "fact". I would do the same in writing a book (people are, after all, looking for your view). But as a reader I think it is important to keep in mind this is the process followed by one very experienced individual. A careful read shows that even he is saying things can change immediately and many other things will matter. But in much of the book it would be easy to drift into thinking he is providing "the answer".

Second, I felt the book was a little unstructured at times. It would have helped to have more of the structure laid out in the front of the book so that as I read I had some idea where we are headed. I think there is a very nice structure there in many parts of the book - he starts with a few well known countries and then uses them as benchmarks as we explore much more of the world - but it is only after reading it that I see the structure. It reads a little like a bunch of individual analyses that he then put together (and given his acknowledgements thank an editor for a magazine he publishes in, that may be the basis).

Neither of these detract so much that I dropped a star. Rather, I think they would be helpful for readers to know so they can get the most out of what is a very interesting book.

'That's why I pick them,' Angelos murmured, but his father frowned his disapproval, dismissing his comment with another wave of his hand.

'I know who you pick! The whole world knows who you pick, Angelos, because the stories are in every newspaper. One week it is a Savannah, the next it is a Gisella—never the same woman for more than a few weeks, and always they are thin, thin, thin.' His Greek accent thickening his words, Costas Zouvelekis made a disparaging noise. 'How can you be happy with a woman who doesn't enjoy her food? Does a woman like that cook for you? No. Does she enjoy life? No, of course not. How can a woman enjoy life when she is starving hungry? The women you pick have the legs and the hair, and they are like athletes in the bedroom, but would they care for your children? No. Would they—?'

'I don't need a woman to cook. I have staff for that purpose.' Angelos wondered briefly whether inviting his father to this particular function might have been a mistake after all. 'And I don't have any children for a woman to care for.'

His father gave a snort of exasperation. 'I know you don't, and I want you to have children. That is the point I am making! You are thirty-four years old and how many times have you been married? None. I am sixty-three and how many times have I been married? Three. It is time you started catching up, Angelos. Make me a grandfather!'

'Ariadne has already made you a grandfather twice.'

'That's different. She's my daughter and you are my son. I want to hold the sons of my son in my arms.'

'I'll get married when I find the right woman, not before.' Angelos drew his father onto the balcony that circled the ballroom and refrained from pointing out that his father's last two attempts at marriage had created emotional and financial devastation.

There was no way he was making that mistake.

'You won't find the right woman by dating the wrong ones! And what are we doing in Paris? Why can't you hold this ball in Athens? What is wrong with Athens?'

'The world is bigger than Greece.'Angelos suppressed a yawn as the conversation shifted onto another familiar topic. 'I conduct business all over the globe.'

'And I never understand why! Did I have to leave Greece to make my first million? No!' Costas peered into the ballroom. 'Where has she gone? I can't see her.'

Angelos raised his eyebrows in question. 'Who are you looking for?'

'The goddess with the body. She was perfect. And now she has disappeared. She was all eyes and curves and soft-looking. Now, that girl would make a good mother. I can imagine her with your children snuggled on her lap and a moussaka cooling on your table.'

Angelos glanced at his father with amusement. 'I suggest you don't tell her that. These days it is heresy to make that sort of comment to a woman. They invariably have rather different aspirations.'

'The women you pick have different aspirations.' His father's voice was fierce as he searched the room with his eyes. 'Believe me, this one was built to be a mother. If you don't want her, then I might be interested myself.'

All trace of amusement left him, and Angelos inhaled sharply.

'Not again!' Didn't his father ever learn? 'Promise me that this time you'll just take her to bed. Don't marry her,' he advised, taking a glass of orange juice from a passing waiter and swapping it for the glass of champagne in his father's hand.

'You only think about bed and sex, but I have more respect for women than that.'

'You need to develop a more cynical approach to the opposite sex,' Angelos advised. 'What respect did Tara show you when she left you after six months, taking with her enough money to keep her going for life?'

His father's knuckles whitened as he gripped the stem of the glass. 'We both made a mistake.'

Mistake? Angelos ground his teeth. He was sure that as far as Tara was concerned the marriage had been a resounding success. She was now an extremely rich young woman.

His father deflated before his eyes, his vulnerability exposed. 'She was very mixed up. She didn't know what she wanted.'

'She knew exactly what she wanted—' Angelos broke off, trapped between the option of upsetting his father still further by highlighting the ruthless efficiency of Tara's campaign, or of letting the subject drop and risking the possibility that, even after two such divorces, his trusting father still hadn't learned the lessons that needed to be learned.

Costas sighed. 'A relationship should be about love and caring.'

Angelos winced at this sentimental and dangerous observation and made a mental note to instruct his security team to screen all women showing the slightest interest in his father in order to protect him from further unscrupulous individuals. 'Didn't your last two marriages teach you anything about women?'

'Yes. They taught me that you can't trust a thin one.' Costas regained some of his spirit. 'They want to be size zero—but why is it called that? Because they are zero use to anyone! They are too thin and hungry to live the life a woman is supposed to live. Next time I marry she will be a proper shape.'

'After everything that has happened over the past six years, you still believe that love exists?'

His father's face fell. 'I was in love with your mother for forty years. Of course I believe that love exists.'

Cursing himself for his lack of tact, Angelos put a hand on his father's shoulder. 'You should stop trying to replace her,' he said roughly. 'What you had was rare.' So rare that he'd given up hope of finding it himself. And he wasn't willing to risk settling for anything less.

'I will find it again.'

Not before it had cost the family a fortune in divorce settlements and mental anguish.

Frustrated by his father's misguided optimism about the female sex, Angelos ran a hand over the back of his neck. 'Stay single. It's less complicated.'

'I'm not staying single. I hate being single. It isn't natural for a man to be single. And you shouldn't be single, either.'

Seeing that his father was about to launch into another lecture in favour of the curvaceous woman, Angelos decided that the conversation had gone on long enough. 'You don't need to worry about me. I'm seeing a woman.' It wasn't the relationship that his father was hoping for, but he didn't need to know that.

His father scowled at him suspiciously. 'Is she a proper shape?'

'She is a perfect shape,' Angelos drawled, thinking of the A list Hollywood actress who had spent two extremely exciting nights in his bed the week before. Would he be seeing her again? Possibly. She had the legs and the hair and she was definitely an athlete in the bedroom. Was he interested in marrying her? Absolutely not. They would bore each other to death within a month, let alone a lifetime.

But hope was already lighting his father's eyes. 'And when will I meet her? You never introduce me to your girlfriends.'

With good reason. Introducing a woman to his father would deliver the exact message he was so careful never to send. 'When a woman is important to me, you will meet her,' Angelos said smoothly. 'And now I want to introduce you to Nicole. She's my Director of Public Affairs here in Paris, and she definitely loves food. I know you'll have plenty to say to one another.'He guided his father towards the reliable Nicole, made the necessary introductions, and then turned back to the ballroom to continue networking.

And stopped dead, his attention caught by the woman directly in front of him.

She walked as though she owned the place, with a gentle swing of her hips and a faint smile on her glossy mouth, as if something or someone had amused her. Her blonde hair was piled on her head and her vivid red dress provided a dazzling splash of colour amidst the predictable boring black. She looked like an exotic rainforest bird let loose among a flock of crows.

Instantly forgetting the Hollywood actress, Angelos watched her for a moment and then gave a slow, satisfied smile of his own. His father would be pleased on two counts, he thought, as he moved purposefully towards the unknown woman. Firstly because he was about to stop thinking about business and turn his attentions to the purs...

The Happy Ending Won't disappoint!

I loved the chemistry between Angelos and Chantal, they were just perfect. The attraction was just great. The story was much as many books I've read but never really gets tired. I love happy endings and this one won't disappoint. I recommend this book highly.

I have recently started reading Hp, with Sarah Morgan you can't not love them! Again, I loved the heroine and the hero. I cannot get enough of her books. I love the down to earth heroine, and they fit together.

This was given to me for Christmas by my mother in 1971 when I was newly married. I still use it's recipes today. The spine is weak now and the most used pages are spattered with ingredients but I still love it and continue to use it. The new copy is for my youngest son who is closer to forty than he would like and who remembers his favourite recipes too. I bought it for him because he is a great cook and will enjoy cooking down memory lane for his wife and son.

I like the book but have my differences on milk in whey and dairy products, but I think its very well explained on most products and the details look very good.

A valuable resource

The Hebrew-English Interlinear ESV – I am so glad to finally own this edition. As a pastor, I have previously used the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (which is the same source document for English translations of the Bible) but the down-side of it is… I can’t read Hebrew.

I own it because I figured, “One day I will sit down and learn to read Biblical Hebrew.” But the reality is, I can’t even find the time to exercise, go for walks, play longer with my kid or eat healthy so when I am I going to find the time to learn to read Hebrew?

This is why I am so glad the editors at Crossway have released this volume. First off, the ESV translation is my favorite English version of the Bible. So right away, this book immediately becomes a valuable resource in my library.

Inside the book on each page the Hebrew text is laid out word-by-word above an English translation showing the “basic meaning” and study of each word. And as an extra bonus, the ESV text is presented separately in the out-most column.

The volume comes as a hardback and has an extra wide cover (.625” x 9.25”) to allow for the extra text. This book is as large as a standard FULL Bible (over 2,000 pages), but remember this is just the Hebrew portion, so you are only getting the Old Testament.

Again, this is a valuable tool for any pastor, scholar, or teacher. Highly recommended!

You would do well to purchase this as an excellent volume for Hebrew OT study. Well laid out...easy on the eyes with an excellent font. Check Crossways Site for a sample page of this volume! The main thing I love is the Hebrew font is clear and well printed. This is Kittel's Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia.
I did a look-up of variances of the volume as opposed to the underlying KJV. OT Text and came across this listing. According to kjvtoday.com, a pro KJV website, the Hebrew text edited by Jacob Ben Chayyim and the third edition of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia differ in only eight verses.

1 Kings 20:38: “ashes upon his face” - “bandage over his eyes”
Proverbs 8:16: “all the judges of the earth” - “all who judge rightly”
Isaiah 10:16: “Lord” - “LORD”
Isaiah 27:2: “vineyard of red wine” - “pleasant vineyard”
Isaiah 38:14: “LORD” - “Lord”
Ezekiel 30:18: “Be darkened” - “Be held back”
Zephaniah 3:15: “see evil” - “fear evil”
Malachi 1:12: “table of the LORD” - “table of the Lord”

So if these are valid in variance this is a worthwhile volume for your library ...that coupled with the literal highly accurate ESV , makes for enriching study. I look fraward to using this for years to come. Other than the case laminate cover which I do not prefer, other wise it is fairly compact for a large volume, good paper thick enough for high-lightening, and a Smyth-Sewn binding to boot! A very nice aid for those who know some Hebrew and study the OT.

This is a good study aid for someone who does not know Hebrew and does not intend to learn it. What makes this interlinear edition valuable is that the ESV is one of the best translations which make an effort to combine good English while staying very close to the literal Hebrew, which is harder to do with Hebrew than it is with Greek, I have seen similar interlinear translations with ESV and New Testament Greek, and there is one huge difference between this OT treatment and the NT Greek. For the New Testament, all the elements entering into the declensions of nouns and the conjugations of verbs are spelled out, such as gender, number, tense, and what have you. This treatment has none of that, although if you did have a good working knowledge of Hebrew, this presentation would enable you to more easily find your way around a good Hebrew / English Lexicon.
