PR! - A Social History of Spin, by Stuart Ewen

The early years of the twentieth century were a difficult period for Big Business. Corporate monopolies, the brutal exploitation of labor, and unscrupulous business practices were the target of blistering attacks from a muckraking press and an increasingly resentful public. Corporate giants were no longer able to operate free from the scrutiny of the masses.“The crowd is now in the saddle,” warned Ivy Lee, one of America's first corporate public relations men. “The people now rule. We have substituted for the divine right of kings, the divine right of the multitude.” Unless corporations developed means for counteracting public disapproval, he cautioned, their future would be in peril. Lee's words heralded the dawn of an era in which corporate image management was to become a paramount feature of American society. Some corporations, such as AT&T, responded inventively to the emergency. Others, like Standard Oil of New Jersey (known today as Exxon), continued to fumble the PR ball for decades. The Age of Public Relations had begun. In this long-awaited, pathbreaking book, Stuart Ewen tells the story of the Age unfolding: the social conditions that brought it about; the ideas that inspired the strategies of public relations specialists; the growing use of images as tools of persuasion; and, finally, the ways that the rise of public relations interacted with the changing dynamics of public life itself. He takes us on a vivid journey into the thinking of PR practitioners—from Edward Bernays to George Gallup—exploring some of the most significant campaigns to mold the public mind, and revealing disturbing trends that have persisted to the present day. Using previously confidential sources, and with the aid of dozens of illustrations from the past hundred years, Ewen sheds unsparing light on the contours and contradictions of American democracy on the threshold of a new millennium.

Amazon.com Review
As "spin" assumes an omnipresent role in contemporary discourse, chasing out frank or direct speech with buzzwords and carefully weighted terminology, the time is ripe for a study of the industry that started it all. Stuart Ewen has written an exhaustive study of public relations that traces the evolution of PR throughout the 20th century, from the history of early advertising to its role in politics and "corporate communications." PR! is a book not just for industry types or communications majors, it contains thoughtful reflections on the impact of manufactured media on our culture and democracy, topics relevant to all.

From Publishers Weekly
Is there any difference between PR and propaganda? Ewen (All Consuming Images), a professor of media studies at Hunter College in Manhattan, doesn't think so. Accordingly, his account of the rise of the public relations industry begins with the U.S. Committee on Public Information, a government-sponsored organization dedicated to maintaining domestic morale during WWI. In the aftermath of the war, Ewen argues, public relations developed largely out of a corporate fear that genuine democracy would obstruct the workings of big business, with PR pioneer Edward Bernays offering, as he phrased it, lessons in "the engineering of consent." As corporations like AT&T began to perceive the importance of utilizing public relations in the face of a public increasingly suspicious of monolithic companies, the PR industry hit its stride by learning to incorporate many of the tactics and iconography of the New Deal while simultaneously opposing its progressive politics. Ewen's book trails off after the 1940s; he doesn't substantially probe the colossal impact of television or the incursion of PR methods into politics in more recent times. And although he presents a convincing portrait of a business elite attempting to use techniques of persuasion to distort and mold public opinion, he doesn't fully address the question of PR's effectiveness.

From Library Journal
A social critic and historian concerned with images and the power they have on society, Ewen (Channels of Desire, Univ. of Minnesota, 1992) presents here a social history of public relations in the United States. Modern PR rose as an attempt to explain the turmoil and confusion that occurred in the country from the end of the Civil War to the first decade of the 20th century. Public reaction to the excesses of industrialization and the growing immigrant classes caused many in power to fear that the "American way of life" was being destroyed. Ewen reviews the ongoing conflict in public relations between those who think the public is rational and want to present the facts and let people make up their minds, and those who think that opinion can be shaped by appeals to unconscious urges. Ewen gives fascinating examples of the communication similarities between FDR and Reagan, and why AT&T was loved by the public and Standard Oil hated. This provocative book should be purchased by all public and academic libraries.?William W. Sannwald, San Diego P. L.

Public Relations: To inform or persuade?
By ewomack
Public relations (PR) has become so pervasive that its very existence almost goes undetected. Some of it remains on such a level of subtlety that many observers would never notice. Seeing PR requires knowing what to look for. It lurks in obvious places such as advertising and political dialogue. But it can also appear in less obvious places such as photography, movies, television shows and news stories. Once it makes itself known the realization that the modern world is literally covered with PR hits home like a flail to the torso. This realization can dig so deep that one's own identity can even come into question. How much of who we are, what we believe in, and our framework of the world has come from public relations offices? Probably a fair amount. Decoding this miasma of stratified information would encumber a lifetime. Stuart Ewen, the author of this very ambitious history of public relations, struggles with this same question in chapter two. After all, Where is the objective frame of reference for studying something as über alles as PR? Perhaps such a perspective exemplifies philosopher Thomas Nagel's "view from nowhere."

"PR! A Social History of Spin" covers a lot of infrequently covered ground. How many have heard of the now defunct United States Committee of Public Relations (CPI)? Or the philosophy of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)? It's all here. Roughly, the book covers attitudes towards and potential controlling of "the crowd" or "the public" from 1907 to the 1980s. The definition of "public relations" remains elusive throughout, but it takes on various meanings through the delineation of its history over some 400 pages. In the end, "public relations" involves a mosaic of multifarious concepts, attitudes and methodologies. All involve projecting specific ideas of reality to "the public" at large. As this book shows, voluminous creativity has gone into this idea.

The book opens with the author's visit to arguably one of the most influential, and least known publicly, practitioners of public relations: Edward Bernays. Some think he was even more influential than his uncle Sigmund Freud. Bernays applied many of Freud's psychoanalytic ideas to mass persuasion. He created an industry and, arguably, a way of life still in effect today. His endless list of PR accomplishments includes breaking the social taboo against women smoking and providing a framework for public relations. This framework, from the 1947 essay "The Engineering of Consent" includes three main elements: 1. Study the public as "raw materials"; 2. sway the public through emotional, not intellectual, appeals; 3. Create news via stagecraft. These elements, according to the author, still guide PR today.

Bernays' thought represents one major branch of public relations. The book covers both perspectives in depth. On one side sit those who believe that those in power should sway "the masses" with methodologies of persuasion. In other words, they should create a reality to keep the public "in check." Bernays exemplifies this position (perhaps "Bernaysians" would serve as a fitting moniker?). On the other side sit those who think public relations should inform, not persuade the public. The "Progressive Publicists" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries propounded this idea. To such thinkers, information provides the panacea for social ills. An informed public is an empowered public. The swing between these nearly opposing poles pervades the history of public relations, though the book suggests that the followers of Bernays have triumphed. Conceding this, a short concluding chapter asks what implications Bernaysianism carries for modern democracy.

An interesting chapter explores the public relations of the Roosevelt New Deal administration. As frustration towards business practices skyrocketed throughout the 1930s, public relations was used fervently against Wall Street. The New Deal even utilized both branches of public relations to create support for social welfare programs. Using both emotional and intellectual appeals, FDR kept the New Deal alive until a massive business backlash following the war. During the late 1940s and 1950s, business borrowed New Deal tactics for their own ends. Social programs, taxation, and communism fell under the axe of this era's PR. Looking at today's landscape, this approach proved extremely successful. By appropriating New Deal rhetoric of "the greater good," late 20th century business practitioners were able to undermine many of FDR's social programs. As television entered the public sphere, the public relations industry saw a golden opportunity. And they took it. As early as 1955 a book entitled "Telephone News on Television" provided guidance for mass persuasion via television.

The book's bulk deals mainly with post-war public relations. Not until the book's fifth and final part does television enter the discussion. The post 1950s era gets largely sequestered to chapters 15 and 16. Those looking for contemporary perspectives on PR will only find nibbles here. Though the book nonetheless remains incredibly relevant today. Also, its publication date of 1996 pretty much precludes any discussion of the now most pervasive PR tool: the internet. And though the author's political stance stands out like neon, the book provides a fascinating, potentially life-altering, perspective on modern media and modern life. The thick pages of "PR! A social history of spin" carry massive implications for anyone living in a modern democracy. People from any political persuasion will benefit.

Can't go wrong reading this book!
By Shaunessy
I first bought/read this book over a dozen years ago. It was an enlightening read providing a lot of insight into the world of public relations and advertising. I've recommended this book to friends as a great primer and most agree this is a great read. I've read several works since on the subject matter and while this was my "first" it's hard to compare them as this one did such a great job.

Review

"I like your book for a survey of manufacturing processes. Most other books go into such detail that it could take two, three, or four courses to fully cover the material. It is difficult to use a book of that depth as an introduction to manufacturing; your book will do the job." — Thomas J. Beck, Texas A&M University

"The text's strengths are excellent illustrations, breadth of topics, and easy-to-understand treatment." — Ramamurthy Prabhakaran, Old Dominion University

The Simplicity That is in Christ
By I. D. Soria
Excellent book. The author has thoroughly studied essential biblical doctrines and made the New Testament gospel easily understandable in this concise and well-written work. Rev. Bernard is not an amateur writer. He holds a doctorate of jurisprudence with honors from the University of Texas and a bachelor's degree magna cum laude in mathematical sciences and managerial studies from Rice University. Hardly the signs of a cult member.

Might I say that if there is anything that is cultic in nature, it is the Gentile, neo-pagan, tritheistic, mythical doctrine of "the trinity", which is found no place in Scripture. Trinitarianism has more in common with the Bhagavad-Gita than it does with the Jewish/Christian bible. It negates everything in the Jewish Tanach (the Old Testament). The Apostle Paul said Christians are to be "built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone", prophets primarily meaning the books of the Old Testament. Therefore the Shema (q.v.) cannot be contradicted with new (as compared to older, Judaistic monotheism), privately interpreted, artificial doctrine of "the trinity".

Also, concerning speaking with tongues, "A Reader" is completely incorrect and dead wrong. The Assemblies of God, the world's largest trinitarian Pentecostal organization states, "The baptism of believers in the Holy Ghost is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance...the speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues, but is different in purpose and use." Hence, there are those other than Oneness Pentecostals who believe the exact same thing concerning the necessity of "speaking in tongues", as salvation is not effected until one recieves the Spirit of Christ by faith. The Oneness movement sprang out of the Assemblies of God and simply retained this doctrine which they already shared with them while in the AG.

Overall, the primacy of biblical Christianity over historical Christianity must be adhered to, and Oneness theology is biblical, trinitarianism is historical (though only after circa 325 A.D.) When historical teachings are placed above biblical teachings, it is then that cults are formed. As for previous reviews, I say: Avoid ignorance and second-hand information at all costs. Read the book, and read the Bible.

The New Birth in the Bible and What Denominationalists Believe
By Amazon Customer
"THE NEW BIRTH: VOLUME 2" by Dr. David K. Bernard, (J.D.), matches the actual Bible Teachings in the New Testament, followed by the Apostles and the Early Church, according to and as written in the Holy Scriptures. Modern denominations, however, have rejected the actual teachings of the New Testament Bible, in order to follow along with the creeds and writings of the church leaders from the Third Century and forward, continuing to do so even now, though many new manuscripts have been found using satellite imagery in the Middle East, to make these discoveries, which have revealed with more certainty than ever before that our Modern Bibles proclaim doctrines that have been long abandoned by Christianity and its modern denominations -- such as early Apostolic teaching on the practice of water baptism, and of the infilling of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The denominations of Christianity have instead followed the practice of Third and Fourth Century writers, changing earlier Apostolic doctrines to include the Trinity, different methods of water baptism, and of receiving the baptism/infilling of the Holy Spirit.

Few theologians are willing to swim upstream in opposition to the mainline theologians and denominations, who, though they have spent years in researching and developing studies of the Bible, have merely followed the teachings and creeds of earlier theologians of their own denominations. This practice has robbed the denominational churches of the practices that demonstrate the real power and Presence of our Lord in the midst of the churches, and has caused most churches in our world today to be completely without the real Presence of our Lord in their activities.

This book documents what the Bible actually teaches. For hungry souls who truly love God and are willing to forsake the traditionalisms of the modern denominations, taking a stand in belief of the true Bible teachings, they will be lead to discover new dimensions of Holy power and understanding of God in our world today.

Excellent Book that Proclaims BIBLICAL TRUTHS
By A Reader
"...Straight is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that go in thereat." The majority of Christendom has yet to discover the truths written in this book, but it does not make them any less true. It is a scholarly, well-written book that proclaims the truth that the Bible teaches. I am glad that I have it in my collection!!!

Pond Aquaculture Water Quality Management, by Claude E. Boyd, C.S. Tucker

The efficient and profitable production of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic organisms in aquaculture depends on a suitable environment in which they can reproduce and grow. Because those organisms live in water, the major environ mental concern within the culture system is water quality. Water supplies for aquaculture systems may naturally be oflow quality or polluted by human activity, but in most instances, the primary reason for water quality impairment is the culture activity itself. Manures, fertilizers, and feeds applied to ponds to enhance production only can be partially converted to animal biomass. Thus, at moderate and high production levels, the inputs of nutrients and organic matter to culture units may exceed the assimilative capacity of the ecosystems. The result is deteriorating water quality which stresses the culture species, and stress leads to poor growth, greater incidence of disease, increased mortality, and low produc tion. Effluents from aquaculture systems can cause pollution of receiving waters, and pollution entering ponds in source water or chemicals added to ponds for management purposes can contaminate aquacultural products. Thus, water quality in aquaculture extends into the arenas of environmental protection and food quality and safety. A considerable body of literature on water quality management in aquaculture has been accumulated over the past 50 years. The first attempt to compile this information was a small book entitled Water Quality in Warmwater Fish Ponds (Boyd I 979a).

Hegel's Naturalism: Mind, Nature, and the Final Ends of Life, by Terry Pinkard

Terry Pinkard draws on Hegel's central works as well as his lectures on aesthetics, the history of philosophy, and the philosophy of history in this deeply informed and original exploration of Hegel's naturalism. As Pinkard explains, Hegel's version of naturalism was in fact drawn from Aristotelian naturalism: Hegel fused Aristotle's conception of nature with his insistence that the origin and development of philosophy has empirical physics as its presupposition. As a result, Hegel found that, although modern nature must be understood as a whole to be non-purposive, there is nonetheless a place for Aristotelian purposiveness within such nature. Such a naturalism provides the framework for explaining how we are both natural organisms and also practically minded (self-determining, rationally responsive, reason-giving) beings. In arguing for this point, Hegel shows that the kind of self-division which is characteristic of human agency also provides human agents with an updated version of an Aristotelian final end of life.
Pinkard treats this conception of the final end of "being at one with oneself" in two parts. The first part focuses on Hegel's account of agency in naturalist terms and how it is that agency requires such a self-division, while the second part explores how Hegel thinks a historical narration is essential for understanding what this kind of self-division has come to require of itself. In making his case, Hegel argues that both the antinomies of philosophical thought and the essential fragmentation of modern life are all not to be understood as overcome in a higher order unity in the "State." On the contrary, Hegel demonstrates that modern institutions do not resolve such tensions any more than a comprehensive philosophical account can resolve them theoretically. The job of modern practices and institutions (and at a reflective level the task of modern philosophy) is to help us understand and live with precisely the unresolvability of these oppositions. Therefore, Pinkard explains, Hegel is not the totality theorist he has been taken to be, nor is he an "identity thinker," la Adorno. He is an anti-totality thinker.

Review

"A masterpiece of clear, scrupulous exposition and an exceptionally able defense of Hegel's thought. It is, if anything, more interesting philosophically than the outstandingly accomplished Hegel exegesis that it also is.... Hegel's Naturalism is as stunningly good a piece of systemiatic philosophy in relation to modern life as one is likely to find anywhere."--Richard Eldridge, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"Pinkard's book develops a powerful, attractive reading of Hegel's conception of spirit. While offering a wealth of insights and novel perspectives on concrete details from different parts of Hegel's system, it manages at the same time to make emerge a convincing overall picture of spirit as an open-ended, continuously struggling activity aiming at the final end of being at one with itself against all odds." -- Mind

Unfortunately, there were no reviews available when I bought my copy. This is strictly undergrad material; nothing deeper. So beware. If you are familiar with Hegel stay clear of this book. It has a 2012 publication date but has no contemporary trends addressed. A good book for a junior in college. There could have been other avenues of addressing the topics; but the target audience might have been undergrads. They need books too. Not recommended to those who know Hegel's work

Amazon.com Review
Managing Reference Data in Enterprise Databases explores technologies and techniques for managing data that's used to categorize or sort data, with emphasis on keeping it clean, consistent, and current. Reference data, in the lingo of author Malcolm Chisholm, is primarily any data that is used to categorize other data. The U.S. Postal Service abbreviations "PA" for Pennsylvania and "HI" for Hawaii are examples of reference data. Under Chisholm's definition, reference data is generally not data that exists on a remote system, or that another organization maintains. This book has an academic tone and steers clear of implementation issues that exist in particular database management systems (DBMS); it's a platform-independent engineer's handbook, full of structural diagrams, standard SQL queries, and pseudocode.

Using the clear and widely understood IDE1FIX means of graphically representing table relationships, the author shows how reference tables exist alongside other database contents. He presents some of the reference data problems that pop up in real life (in one succinct example, he writes about getting bonds rated "AAA" to come ahead of bonds rated "A," even though "A" comes first in ASCII sorts). His content will make you think about how to redesign your databases to use reference data more reliably, and offer you enough advice to enable you to realize your designs. --David Wall

Topics covered: Efficient database design as it relates to reference data, or data that's used to categorize other pieces of data. Sections deal with establishing table relationships, deciding on special values (such as those for "none" versus "not applicable"), and dealing with multiple languages. There's also information on referring to remotely maintained reference data, such as abbreviations lists maintained by the International Standards Organization (ISO).

"This is a great book! I have to admit I wasn't enthusiastic about the idea of a book with such a narrow topic initially, but, frankly, it's the first professional book I've read page to page in one sitting in a long time. It should be of interest to DBAs, data architects and modelers, programmers who have to write database programs, and yes, even managers. This book is a winner."
—Karen Watterson, Editor, SQL Server Professional

"Malcolm Chisholm has produced a very readable book. It is well-written and with excellent examples. It will, I am sure, become the Reference Book on Reference Data."

Not useful in the real world
By Likes to listen to radio
The book is good if you are interested in theory only, bu the author seems to not know all that much about database management systems and real applications. On page 201 in the section on Fusing Codes and Descriptions, he claims that needing to know the Code Type is a disadvantage. Not so if each Code Type is a database view and the application programmer would see each code type, and only that code type, through a database view. That's how the real world would deal with this. In addition he deals with indexes on reference data tables from a retrieval perspecive. Since most of these types of tables would fit in less than thre database pages, most SQL optimizers would scan the table and NOT use an index access. He also mentions that performance can be improved by placing all reference data tables in physical proximity on disk. In the real world, reference data tables would be place into their own buffer pool and the physcial access after the first read becomes irrlevent. Not a good read if you need to implement a real world system.

Unique and focused on an often overlooked subject
By Mike Tarrani
This unique book fills a much needed void in data architecture and system design. Reference data is too often done as an afterthought when data architecture starts taking form. Worse, it is too often misused, resulting in no clear boundaries between transaction data structures and real reference data.
Mr. Chisholm starts with definitions of what reference data is, and what it is not. He defines reference data as data that is used to categorize, classify, or otherwise qualify or constrain transaction data. In other words, reference data is typically used in look-up tables. This brings us to what reference data is not - it's not transaction structure data, although it is commonly miscast into this role. To see the difference using an example from my own experience, a two column table of reference data could be a digital phone manufacturer and the first three octets of an electronic serial number that is assigned to the manufacturer. This is static. Extending this example to another table of reference data that is keyed to the first could be the manufacturer and specific phone models. While models come and go, this is still static and qualifies as reference data. However, a designer might be tempted to include a table that lists a specific phone, keyed on the electronic serial number, but also keyed to a status, such as active, inactive or stolen. This is a transaction structure because it changes based on a number of conditions, such as if the equipment is active and assigned to a customer, or in stock. Therein lies the distinction and the theme of the book - reference data is static and other types of data are not.
The author covers basic database design concepts, types of reference data and their use, and managing reference data. As the book progresses it is apparent that there is a lot more to consider about reference data than including look-up tables in a database. This is amply shown in the chapter on the reference data life cycle where he discusses changing codes and descriptions. Other issues that the data architect needs to take into consideration, thoroughly covered in this book, are mapping reference data, and implementing reference data in an existing database. Too often look-up tables are added to the schema with no thought to how it is going to be integrated and maintained. The author gives some sage advice on this topic.
I particularly liked the discussion on what I call "reference data from hell" - dates, times & time zones, currency conversions and the such. Also germane because I recently did a consulting assignment in the Middle East is the treatment of foreign languages and translations. I was most gratified, however, to see a chapter that addressed testing reference data and the associated problems with production vs. test data. From personal experience I can attest that this is often overlooked and is a real problem if your data architecture uses a lot of reference data. My main experience is wireless telecom provider billing systems which use a *lot* of reference data. Mr. Chisholm's advice on testing is on the mark and should be heeded.
This book is valuable to any data architect or system designer, however, its real value is to those who are working with e-commerce systems and telecommunications billing systems, because both domains heavily use reference data and need the mature approach set forth in this book.
