A Great Meta Sequel

With the publication of his wildly successful and outrageously funny Portnoy's Complaint in 1969, Philip Roth formally entered the ranks of America's up and coming must-read literary stars. But it also opened a Pandora's box of issues having to do with the fact that Portnoy was depicted as explicitly Jewish, sexually obsessed, and that Roth's portrayal of Portnoy's Jewish family was much less than flattering.

America in 1969 remember, was culturally only a few years removed from Jewish quotas for medical and law school acceptances, and restricted country clubs, hotels and real estate. Years later Jon Stuart (who was 7 years old in 1969) would joke in a stage whispered "Is it good for the Jews?" but in 1969 this question was asked more seriously by American Jews still not entirely trusting of or comfortable living in a country that had refused admittance to thousands of would-be Jewish �migr�s from Germany in the 40s.

Sixteen years later we have Zuckerman Bound, comprised of the three novels originally published separately: The Ghost Writer (1979), Zuckerman Unbound (1981), and The Anatomy Lesson (1983), and the novella The Prague Orgy (1969), in which Roth brilliantly addresses these issues of personal and artistic identity head-on. Nathan Zuckerman, the protagonist throughout all four books is clearly Roth's alter ego, and Zuckerman's published book, Carnovsky, (Roth's Portnoy's Complaint) succeeds commercially and foments conflict between Zuckerman and his father, brother and a raft of father surrogates.

Is Roth's hilarious but incisive depiction of these Jewish characters a matter of artistic integrity or cultural betrayal? He could have left the question unanswered after writing Portnoy. He could have moved on to the next book and left it well enough alone. Instead, over the course of at least these four books, he explores the issue directly and he does so in what I think is a most powerful way, by going to the meta-level: the story about the story about the story.... In this case Roth's surrogate, Zuckerman is himself facing these very dilemma(s).

The issues of cultural/artistic identity are developed progressively through the four books with the father-son conflict theme introduced in the first novel where Zuckerman's father pleas with him not to publish a short story exposing the family's scandalous conflict between the family's black sheep nephew and his aunt over an inheritance.

In the second book, the theme is extended to include Zuckerman's brother's accusation that the publication of Carnofsky caused their father's death with its insulting portrayal of Carnovsky's mother.

In The Anatomy Lesson, Zuckerman's struggle is with his two father surrogates, Appel, the Jewish literary critic and self-appointed defender of the Jewish people against the infidel Zuckerman, and later, Mr. Freytag, his college roommate's father.

Finally, in The Prague Orgy, as these themes are air-lifted into the state controlled communist regime of 1976 Czechoslovakia, the intriguing notion is introduced of the writer as spy on his own life and that of others in his life. Talk about the "meta level." Here we have the ultimate self- referential burlesque of Kafka. Particularly emblematic here is the hilariously macabre vignette of the Czech writer who agreed to spy on himself and to write reports for the state on his own life for his police informant friend because the friend was not a good writer:

"I said, `Blecha, I will follow myself for you. I know what I do all day better than you, and I have nothing else to keep me busy. I will spy on myself and I will write it up, and you can submit it to them as your own. They will wonder how your rotten writing has improved overnight, but you just tell them you were sick. This way you won't have anything damaging on your record, and I can be rid of your company, you (expletive deleted).' Blecha was thrilled. He gave me half of what they paid him...."

In this fourth book, the whole matter of the rebellion from authority - the struggle between fathers and sons begun in the Ghost Writer and developed more in Zuckerman Unbound - (did he kill his own father?) takes on a whole new level when it is the state assuming the authority role through its censorship of literary work.

All of the above does not begin to do justice to Roth's first-rate authenticity in writing dialogue and creating characters, and most of all, the sheer hilarity with which he explores issues that go deeply into what it means to be human.

Fame and Pain

Zuckerman is Roth's equivalent to that other 20th Century fictional alter-ego, Updike's Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom. But while Updike's character is an American everyman, his average desires, inclinations, career and relationships drawn with the fine pen, the two inches of ivory of Updike's conventional East Coast suburbs; Roth's Zuckerman swings wildly through the American beserk on a roiling stream of consciousness that takes him from noble, high purpose striving writer in his early twenties, visiting his hero E.I. Lonoff, to wrecked, neurotic acclaimed (and reviled) man of letters in his forties.

Roth's Zuckerman books are perhaps his string of writing where the gap between the banks of life and art are at their narrowest. Zuckerman finds fame with his novel of Jewish sexual guilt (Carnovsky) and has to cope out with the fall out of that success - accosted on the bus, in the street, outside his appartment, by cranks, the media, people accusing him of being an anti Semitic Jew, his family accusing him of betraying their secrets.

Zuckerman's great contradiction - yearning for liberty, but recognising the innate drive towards inhibition and security leads to a fastinating portrayal of themes towards the middle and end of the trilogy plus coda. By middle age Zuckerman, wracked with pain, drugs and an emotional life more messy than Woody Allen's (a nice counterpoint, there, considering Allen's 1998 Roth-lite film 'Deconstructing Harry') decides his pursuit of literary greatness has lead to his unravelling and decides to train as a doctor. A ludicrous and comic plan that leads to an encounter with a pornographer, and a journey to the heart of darkness of the health system.

The coda, 'The Prague Orgy', is a fitting finale. Shorter than the others, a novella of some eighty pages, the scene changes to Communist Prague as Zuckerman travels there in a futile attempt to claim the manuscript of some Yiddish short stories for a Czech friend of his in New York. There he meets Olga, a trashy vamp of a woman, wife of the deceased artist, whose desperate plight forces Zuckerman to review his own precarious and turbulent liberty. He also gets a lecture from the Czech authorities who take a very different view of the value of culture and freedom to Zuckerman.

Overall, a fascinating portrait of a late 20th Century American literary celebrity. But what an ego! Roth, like Updike, thinks the importance of his own life is of such supreme magnitude that the whole world should take notice and listen. Roth is not Zuckerman, of course, but when he says things such as 'When there are banners across Manhattan calling for the return of Portnoy, I might act', you realise that he shares with his fictional creation a concern to write his own will on world. The great American novelists of this period -Bellow (gone), Roth and Updike (going, slowly) are all in this mould. There is a world outside their own neurosis, their own back problems, their own concerns with mortality. This world is glimpsed at in 'The Prague Orgy'. Roth also grasped this nettle during his late period flowering - The Human Stain, American Pastoral etc.. Were that he had discovered this external world earlier on in the Zuckerman trilogy.

Episodes from the life of a Jewish American writer, a `trilogy with an epilogue', written in the 1970s/80s and set in the 1950s-70s.
It starts with `The Ghost Writer' set in the 1950s. 20 years later, writer Nathan Zuckerman remembers. As a young man, a student and budding writer, he visited his idol, a literary great, at his home in the Berkshires.
The young man's thoughts were preoccupied by an ongoing conflict with his father about Nathan's way of depicting Jewish life. A conflict of Joycian dimensions, while the older writer's situation is more Jamesian.
Mental romance is added by a young female visitor with unclear identity. Nathan builds an instant crush and imagines her being Anne Frank as a survivor. Wouldn't that solve his trouble with dad?

Volume 2 is `Zuckerman Unbound'. 15 years later, young Nathan is unbound in many ways. He has made money from a bestseller. His father is in a Florida nursing home with dementia and can't accuse him any longer. His mother never accused him anyway, only her friends do. He is separated from his third wife, an unbearable waspish do-gooder. He lives in Manhattan, society is open to his new stardom, and he has only his own paranoid state of mind to blame for his continued troubles.
His Anne Frank obsession continues... he has a brief affair with a film star who had started her career playing Anne on the stage in Ireland.

Volume 3 is `The Anatomy Lesson'. Nathan is 40 and an orphan now. He is plagued by guilt for the anguish that he had caused his parents. He is also plagued by excruciating unexplained pain and he lost the drive to write. He still has the sex drive, but can't have relationships. He becomes thoroughly unlikable and crazier by the day. He hits bottom when he travels to Chicago while on a cocktail of pain killers, vodka and pot. A core element of this third volume is a flood of vulgar rants that the drugged Zuckerman unleashes on strangers. He tries to redefine his life, start all over in a different world. Futile mid-life dreams.

The Epilogue takes Nathan to Prague, where he meets writers with real world (political) problems, as opposed to his own (minor?) domestic issues of a Freudian nature. Does it cure him from his navel gazing? Yes. Nathan is 'normal' again.
He meets a Czech writer in exile who asks him to help smuggle out manuscripts hidden in Prague.It is 1976 and Breshnev is still in full Stalinist glory. Oppression goes along with a dosis of anti- Semitism.
But lest you anticipate a dour tale of politics, Roth bypasses your worries and finds an outrageous tone of satirical scorn. Scorn of the politics and amusement at the intellectuals with their bohemian antics. His tale of friends spying on each other is the funniest treatment of the subject that I remember.

The LoA volume includes an additional text, a TV script based on the novella. It was written for BBC, but never produced. At the time, Roth was in a relation with a British actress who should have starred in it. Hanna Schygulla was supposed to play the other female role. It might have become a great film, but we will probably never know.

I don't know Philip Roth well yet. I am so far much impressed by his imaginative word-smithing, though the semi- permanent focus on two main subjects might become tiring. The joys of being Jewish in America, and the troubles with sex might not be enough to keep me going for many more volumes. The Prague novella shows a way out of the hermitage.

About the Author
SUSAN LOBO is a consultant, emphasizing research, advocacy, and project design and development. She works primarily for American Indian communities, nonprofits, and nations in the United States and Central and South America. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona and has taught at the University of California at Berkeley, where she was the coordinator of the Center for Latin American Studies. She has also taught in Native American Studies Departments at the University of California, Davis, and at the University of Arizona, and she has taught environmental studies at Merritt College. Between 1978 and 1994 she was the coordinator of the Community History Project archive, housed at Intertribal Friendship House, the Indian Center in Oakland, California. This archive is now at the Bancroft Library, Berkeley. For many years she was also a producer of the KPFA-FM radio series Living on Indian Time. She was a co-founder of the South and Central American Indian Information Center and of the American Indian Community History Center.
Her books include A House of My Own: Social Organization in the Squatter Settlements of Lima, Peru (1982); American Indians and the Urban Experience (co-editor; 2000); Urban Voices: The Bay Area American Indian Community (2002); and The Sweet Smell of Home: The Life and Art of Leonard F. Chana (2009). She has also written many articles for professional and popular journals. She is currently a distinguished visiting scholar in American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona and a consultant for Tohono O’odham Community Action.
STEVE TALBOT received a master’s degree in anthropology and community development in 1967 from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974. In the early 1960s he was an American Friends Service Committee fieldworker in Indian community development on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona. He served on the board of Oakland’s Intertribal Friendship House and was closely associated with Indian student activism, the 1969 Alcatraz occupation, and the founding of the University of California at Berkeley Native American Studies program. He was acting assistant professor of Native American studies there from 1971 to 1974.
He has lectured and taught Native American studies courses in Europe and at several universities in the United States. He chaired the anthropology and sociology departments at the University of the District of Columbia, until 1983, and was a lecturer in Native American Studies at the University of California at Davis from 1988 to 1990. In 1999 Talbot retired from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. Currently he is adjunct professor of anthropology at Oregon State University and an instructor in sociology and Native American Studies at Lane Community College. His publications have dealt mainly with Native American sovereignty, religious freedom, and political activism. These include the book Roots of Oppression: The American Indian Question (1981); the article “Academic Indianismo: Social Scientific Research in American Indian Studies” in American Indian Culture and Research Journal (2002); and the article “Spiritual Genocide: The Denial of American Indian Religious Freedom from Conquest to 1934,” Wicazo Sa Review (2006). Currently he is completing an introductory text with the working title Contemporary Native Nations of North America: An Indigenous Perspective, to be published by Prentice Hall.
TRACI L. MORRIS (Chickasaw/Caucasian) holds a Ph.D. in American Indian Studies. She is the owner of Homahota Consulting and in this capacity serves as the Policy Analyst for Native Public Media. Through Homahota Consulting, Morris provides technical training for Indian country and is a community educator on tribal issues. She has worked with Native urban and tribal communities in the state of Arizona, with state agencies, the Arizona governor’s office, the Phoenix Indian Center, the Tucson Indian Center, and tribal leaders in policy analysis, resource development, and training and technical assistance. She has lectured widely over the years to community and government organizations on a wide range of Native issues and topics. Morris has lectured at universities throughout the country. She has nine years of teaching experience at various colleges and universities in Arizona, including the University of Arizona and Arizona State University. Currently she is adjunct faculty for the American Indian Studies Department at Arizona State University and in the Native American Studies Department at Eastern Central University in Oklahoma.
Morris has also worked in the arts for several museums and galleries, including internships at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, at the George Gustav Heye Center in lower Manhattan, and at the Arizona State Museum. She worked as manager and buyer for Tucson’s oldest Native American Art Gallery, Bahti Indian Arts.

From Textbook to Favorite Source

Lobo et al. Produced a wonderful piece oin this edition confers the problems and concerns of native studies in the colonized world. Particularly issues of identity and sovereignty were highly descriptive. I have referenced this book in further studies after purchasing it for a initial course. As a textbook I would say it is a good introduction to both the blind who do not see contemporary native issues and the unlearned who do not see how deep they are.

Nice Book

Not my exact cup of tea (more of a science kid), but it was a required book for my Native American Culture course to fulfill a humanities requirement, so I bought it.

The book as an overall nice layout for the chapters, and gradually progresses through some of the notable events in Native American culture, and describes their effects on the social development of the Native Americans.

It appears that a lot of time and research went into crafting this book, and that effort is something I genuinely appreciate.

Whether its for class or just for your own personal pleasure, this is a great book. Very informative and helps to understand the current topics of Native American culture. We must remember their history is not just something in the past, but is current, alive and strong today

A Political Science Students Dream! In depth information!

I was given this book as my one of my texts for my AP American Politics/Government and AP Comparitive Governments courses my senior year of high school. This book provided me with a very in depth background of 4 major "Isms" that shaped today's society! Socialism, Capitalism, Fascism, and Communism are all covered thorougly throughout this book. :) It is a must for any political science student, or anyone who wishes to be enlightened! Why 4 stars? Well, at times the reading is a tad-bit dry, but it still provides you with a great background to the "Isms" world! :)

My personal reading extends beyond computer and technical books, I enjoy reading books about almost every subject. When I found this book I was pleasantly surprised to find the reading both informative and enjoyable.
The book is only 210 pages and is any seem small but it is packed with a wealth of information. The authors take a look at several of today's most common isms and give the reader a well-written and well-documented research expose.
Starting off with socialism the authors go into the history of socialism, what made it work and where is failed. They then move to capitalism in which they present the theory behind it. They show the evolution of capitalism into the 20th century and the effects on today's society.
Moving to fascism, you again get the history of the origins, the doctrine that governed it a how it works today. Then you have a chapter on communism, from the beginnings with Marx and Lenin to the USSR and what happened to cause the failure. You also take a look at why Chinese communism is still in existence today and what the difference is between The Soviets and the Chinese.

Finally you cover libertarianism and how is differs from the conservatism and why people sometimes confuse the two. The principles are discussed in detail and how the libertarian philosophy is growing and gaining momentum. Overall an excellent reading and well done research.

The chapter on additional protection mechanisms is very interesting, and so are those that deal with application inspection and that of voice protocols.

It's helpful to point out at this point that advanced users are welcome to skip through chapters, but others should stick to the order given to them by the author, since many of the chapter build on the knowledge introduced in the previous one(s).

The most important thing about this book is that the it's chock full of meaningful and handy examples. This is not a simple handbook - it aims at making the reader think for himself, and make the connection between theory and practice easy and natural.

The last three chapters deal with how IP multicast tasks and the introduction of the IPv6 standard influence the choices on firewall features, and the book ends with a chapter that deals with security design. It is not overly comprehensive, and here is definitely where I could have enjoyed reading more about how new trends like mobility and cloud computing affect the notion of using firewall to protect the future borderless network. But, perhaps that is a subject for another book.

Final thoughts
This book is a must read for everyone who is charged with designing, implementing and deploying firewall solutions, and especially if they are Cisco's.
The author has had the interesting notion of using troubleshooting tools to help show how the various firewall features work, so that, in fact, troubleshooting is "performed"
throughout the book instead of at the end - and you'll be grateful for that"

An outstanding reference in firewalling

If you are looking for a single reference on Cisco Firewalls that goes from design to deployment, this is the book for you.

It starts out with the basics of firewalling (the non-experts will appreciate), but gradually adds on new security aspects, with a lot of practical examples and configurations that provide a link with the theory. I didn't have a deep knowledge of Routing, Bridging, Multicast, VoIP or IPv6, but it was not a problem, as the author has included a good overview of those. The progression from example to example, chapter to chapter, is very logical and the book leads you from the basics to a very advanced level . Not a surprise since the author states that he has a passion for Mathematics.

Some chapters that deserve specific mention:

Chapter 4: Presents the tools that will be used in every chapter to illustrate the concepts

Chapter 5: Excellent introduction to IP Routing. Basic theory behind RIP, OSPF and EIGRP is covered. Not just a bunch of configuration commands.

Chapter 6: Network Virtualization is discussed at the architecture level with many of its typical components (VLANs, VRFs, virtual contexts) being assigned in very interesting use cases.

Chapter 8: ASA NAT (a difficult topic) is analyzed in detail. The way in which the author demonstrated the NAT precedence rules was very creative.

Chapter 9: Although CBAC is not anymore the recommend choice for IOS Firewalling, it is good to see it there. I still have some older routers that do not support ZFW.

Chapter 10: I like the way in which the building blocks of a Zone-based policy are put together. The examples are very instructive.

Chapter 11: Nice review of concepts such as Anti-spoofing, IP Options handling, IP Fragmentation and how they pertain to Firewalling

Chapter 12: Very good demonstration of Layer 7 inspection concepts (CBAC, ZFW, ASA)

Chapter 13: After presenting a quick taxonomy of the Voice Protocols, the author clearly shows why this set of protocols deserve special treatment. H.323, SIP, Skinny, MGCP are covered. And I finally understood TLS-Proxy and Phone-proxy features.

Chapter 14: Nice differentiation between "to the firewall" and "through the firewall" access control and good discussion about the appropriate authentication protocol for each case.

Chapter 15: Multicast. Good introduction. Interesting approach of using IOS and ASA and showing the perspective of each product.

Chapter 16: Good introduction to IPv6 and good summary of supported firewall features

Chapter 17: I do like this chapter. Very nice some to see recurring questions answered. How to take the most advantage of Firewall/IPS combination ? What are the filtering resources available for tunneled traffic ? Also presents design options for Firewall and SLB in a Data Center environment.

I found this book very insightful and I am sure it will soon become a reference. And I have no doubt I will be referring to it very often. Highly recommended.

Review of book

I have been able to start reading the book and I can state that not only is this book written by a security specialist, but also by someone who truly understands the different contexts/environments in which a firewall can be placed. This is definitely a well-organized compendium with the foundations of network security and networking.

In my opinion, it has the following noteworthy points:

- Not just a collection of configuration recipes. This book is not simply about presenting configuration checklists and command explanations. The author presents the fundamental knowledge for each subject and he spices up each chapter with discussions over well-structured and realistic scenarios that will give the readers the capacity and tools to understand, recreate, design, troubleshoot and improve the networks they are in touch with.

- I am particularly fond of chapter 4. The idea of getting familiar with the firewall tools in an early chapter to illustrate "how stuff works" throughout the book, is really interesting. If you have this kind of knowledge it is certainly easier to employ each feature and avoid troubleshooting.

- Not one of those abstract and traditional what-a-firewall-is books. I found the author's approach to present the different purposes/roles that a firewall has really distinguishing. Surely, the reader will find the traditional subjects (e.g. packet filtering, stateful firewall) being covered, but the author takes these discussions to a higher level. With the hands-on labs presented in each chapter, it is possible to truly understand how things work. Moreover, the author talks about further features that firewalls have which are generally underrated. While reading this book, I have learned that a firewall can play important roles in voice, multicast and routing scenarios - with presented theory and discussed scenarios.

- Compendium with the foundations of network security and networking. Even though this is a Cisco labeled book, prospective buyers shouldn't think that its purpose is to just serve as a certification study guide or a configuration guide for Cisco Firewalls. This book dwells between the network security and computer networking realms. It presents valuable knowledge to those who either work with or are interested in either (or both) domains. Furthermore, readers don't need to be either a security specialist or a network guru to take full advantage of this book because the author makes it very easy and practical for anyone to follow the reading. Of course, the information presented is made concrete into Cisco Firewalls commands and how they work. But it could be easily extrapolated to other vendors. This must not be a negative aspect of this book.

- And for those who are dealing with PIX or ASA for a while, the chapters on NAT are a real treatise on the subject.

Very worth reading... Definitely !!!

About the Author
John McCormick is Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Politics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He was educated at Rhodes University (South Africa), the University of London, and Indiana University, and has been a visiting professor at Exeter University and the University of Sussex in Britain, and at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. He has lived in, traveled to, or undertaken research in nearly 40 countries in North and Central America, Europe, Southeast Africa, and Southeast Asia. Before completing his Ph.D. in political science, he worked in the public sector for two environmental interest groups and was a consultant for a number of specialized agencies of the United Nations, including FAO and the UN Environment Program. His teaching and research interests lie in comparative politics and public policy, with particular interests in environmental policy, British politics, and the politics of the European Union. His other publications include EUROPEAN UNION POLITICS (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), EUROPEANISM (Oxford University Press, 2010), and CONTEMPORARY BRITAIN (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition, 2006).

Used as a textbook I found the material fairly current, with good text boxes, and informative. I especially liked the sections on Great Britain and China, but found the section on Islam/Sharia confusing in places. Then after all, that is what you have a professor for!

About the Author
Janet M. Box-Steffensmeier is Vernal Riffe Professor of Political Science and Professor of Sociology at Ohio State University (courtesy), where she is a University Distinguished Scholar and directs the Program in Statistics and Methodology (PRISM). Box-Steffensmeier served as president of the Midwest Political Science Association and the Political Methodology Society and as treasurer of the American Political Science Association. She has twice received the Gosnell Prize for the best work in political methodology, and she received the Emerging Scholar Award from the Elections, Public Opinion, and Voting Behavior Subsection of the American Political Science Association. She was an inaugural Fellow of the Society for Political Methodology. The Box-Steffensmeier Graduate Student Award, given annually by the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), is named after her in recognition of her contributions in political methodology and her support of women in this field.

John R. Freeman is the John Black Johnston Distinguished Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his honors are the Morse-Alumni, All-University, and College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teaching Awards at the University of Minnesota. Freeman is the author of Democracy and Markets: The Politics of Mixed Economies, which won the International Studies Association's Quincy Wright Award, and the coauthor of Three Way Street: Strategic Reciprocity in World Politics. Freeman also edited three volumes of Political Analysis. He has coauthored numerous research articles in academic journals. Many of Freeman's research projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation as well as by the Bank Austria Foundation and the Austrian Ministry of Science.

Matthew P. Hitt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Louisiana State University. His interests include judicial politics, legislative politics, interest groups, the presidency, and quantitative methodology. His research has been published in the American Political Science Review and Presidential Studies Quarterly.

Jon C. W. Pevehouse is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin. His work examines the relationship between domestic and international politics. Pevehouse is the author of Democracy from Above (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and While Dangers Gather (2007). He is the coauthor, with Joshua Goldstein, of International Relations, the leading textbook on international politics. He is the recipient of the Karl Deutch Award, given by the International Studies Association, and has received numerous teaching awards, including the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Wisconsin. Pevehouse is also the editor of the journal International Organization.

Nice text--needs a proofreader

Good intermediate introduction to time-series. Almost all books on this topic are specifically for economics, but these authors bring in political science (voting patterns) and sociological (crime data) models as well as economic, which broadens the usefulness of the text to more disciplines. It is far less intense than Enders (Applied Econometric Time Series), which is far more "mathy." However, this text still requires a lot of math, and the lengthy appendix (to which they continuously refer the reader all the way through the text) is an advanced treatment requiring matrix algebra and higher math). The examples are very helpful, and good writing. However, they could use a better editor, as I found numerous syntax and spelling errors from the very first page, making some sentences difficult to follow. This always makes me suspicious, and as I am not capable of "checking the math," it leaves the reader wondering how much one can trust the proofs and calculations. Along those lines, one specific interpretation error is on p. 50: the AIC and BIC models they claim are the "best" are actually not--this is either another error, or they presume that one should take the absolute value of these to infer better fits, which is incorrect (i.e., they claim the AIC of -193.73 is a better fit than -277.66, which is wrong). There is at least one incorrectly cited equation (p. 60, listed as "equation 2.52, but this is clearly incorrect--possibly it should be 2.55?). Again, it seems to be a really good text, but the 2nd edition needs an alternate proofreader.

The HeartMath Solution may easily be written off as a book too eccentric for widespread public consumption, and that's unfortunate. The title's a bit misleading--it's not about cardiac care and it's not about calculus, but rather how 30 years of research have shown that the heart's "intelligence" affects emotions and physical health--especially when it comes to handling stress--and specifically what you can do to balance heart rhythms, reduce stress hormones, and boost your immune system. Yes, it sounds complicated, especially when you read that cardiologists worked with physicists and psychiatrists to develop the HeartMath program. But it's worth brushing off your skepticism and exploring the concepts in the Solution, as many employees of Fortune 500 companies have already done.

The "intelligence" that the authors focus on refers to both the heart's "brain," or the 40,000 neurons found in the heart (the same number in the brain itself), and the intuitive signals the heart sends, including feelings of love, happiness, care, and appreciation. When such positive emotions are felt, they "not only change patterns of activity in the nervous system; they also reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol." When there's less cortisol, there's more DHEA, the so-called fountain of youth hormone known to have anti-aging effects on many of the body's systems.

The HeartMath Solution outlines 10 steps for harnessing the power of the heart's intelligence, including ways to manage your emotions and keep energy levels high. Heartmath--An amazing book, for the open-minded

I would not have believed this, anything that's supposedly going to help so many ways usually just helps the seller make money. But I found a lot of documentation for what this man says.

I can't begin to give enough information about the benefits of these books and the emawave 2, the model I have.

I can watch my heart beat, like an EEG, on my computer screen. It shows the degree of coherence between the heart and the brain. It's similar to biofeedback, but much more. The more compliance, the better then brain functions. The best analogy is a 3 legged race. If you work in synchronization, you can do it. If not, you'll never be your best.

I can take the little gadget with me anywhere. I just put my thumb on it. The color of the light lets me know my level of coherence.

There are many activities that are fun, as well as the basic monitors. It will keep records on your computer, if you use the computer program.

Don't freak about the price. Watch for used ones. My emwave 2 is perfect and was less than $100 (on Amazon). Even at full price, what would it cost to buy a biofeedback machine that's better than a mood ring?

Dr. Oz used one on his show. He didn't say anything about it, but I saw it in his hand as he explained what he was doing.

With this much evidence, I ordered the book. wow. Now I think I have all the books and booklets by this author. I have learned so much about myself by looking outside the "western medicine" box.

It fits congruently with many other beliefs about mind and body, and not what you read from the AMA. The AMA doesn't make money from healthy people. Some alternative ideas help you get and stay healthier, both medically and emotionally. The authors make money selling books that will help you. You just need an open mind. .

Check things out, don't just do/swallow everything someone recommends.

I'm often a skeptic--but this passed all my "tests".

I have so many new insights from his writing.

Having read and researched his books I recommend them 100%.

Yes it deserves five stars. No that doesn't mean it's perfect. Perhaps in an attempt to establish credibility, much of the first sixty pages are spent with shallow self-serving praise. Since I purchased Heartmath Solution based on the very high recommendations of several independent expers I'd met, and the recommendation in the film, "I Am," answering the the question, "who is responsible for suffering and problems of Earth," I already respected Heartmath and found those first sixty or so pages tiresome. Stay with the read. Don't be turned off by the puffing in the early chapter(s). Once you get to the "Freeze Frame" technique, somewhere past page 50 or 60, you're into the gold. You'll be glad you did.

Quantum Physics and Me

HeartMath Solution is a tool that offered immense help for me in breaking some specific toxic neural pathways that I more or less suffered from most of my life. If one will take time read and to utilize the exercises it offers, one cannot but be helped, in my opinion. This was, however, only a beginning in breaking down negative responses to certain triggers in my mind and emotions. Following this, I was lead by the Lord Jesus' Spirit to Faster EFT with Robert Smith and Bruce Lipton's "Biology of Belief" both on youTube. After that more breakthroughs came when I heard a DVD "Toxic Thinking" by Doctor Caroline Leaf, author of the books: "Who Switched Off My Brain." and "Who Switched On My Brain".
All these sources I've referred to make it very clear that "RIGHT THINKING (BELIEVING) PRODUCES RIGHT LIVING". It is an exciting field especially when you throw in the subject of Quantum physics which serves as a foundation and integral part of the message these people
share.
