According to Andrea, this is a recipe for disaster, and something that happens day after day all around the world. “By the time I finally did an internship in my field and realized I didn’t like it, I was too far down the path to turn around and start over. Instead, I’d pushed on, graduated with a degree that wasn’t right for me and took the first job I could find because I needed to start paying bills. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot.”�

About the Author
Andrea is a Millennial, entrepreneur, and writer. In 2015, she launched the first global gap year community, Gap to Great, as a place for students to share stories, ask questions and provide support for one another before and after the gap year. She's the founder of Aviator, a personal development program focused on creating opportunities for young adults. Her weekly column on Forbes chronicles the future of work, and the ups-and-downs of launching a business. Her writing has appeared around the web for publications including USA Today, Yahoo!, Thrillist, The Huffington Post and Seattle Weekly. On Andrea's podcast, also called Gap to Great, she interviews people about their obstacles, successes and non-traditional life paths. Though Andrea didn't take a gap year, she likes to say she's taken many gaps in her years. Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, she's lived in New York City; Seattle, Washington; and Sydney, Australia since graduating in 2007 from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in journalism and public relations. Gap year's = A MUST (as someone who has done one) --> this book will be your best friend :)

As someone who has taken a gap year herself, is soon getting to an age of having children herself, who is very familiar with Andrea Wien's writing on this topic (this book + beyond) could not recommend this book more highly. I couldn't more strongly believe in the importance of gap years as it pertains of development of character, happiness, knowing what you want in life, accepting others, and yourself. This is SUCH a prime opportunity to have a massively positive impact on a life and this book truly provides everything you need to know to make the most out of this experience. Andrea has an uncanny ability to address most important topics, topics you didn't even know you were missing, her very high EQ also ensures you have all your bases covered...and even end up learning quite a bit about yourself from reading this book. Thumbs up! Just wish you had written the book sooner so my parents could have read it as well.

This book is priceless in todays world of education and ...

This book is priceless in todays world of education and stressed out teenagers. The author hit the nail on the head on so many levels. Being the mother of a 19 year old son who decided to do a gap year I can say from experience that so far it has been immeasurable on so many levels. I am grateful that an author has taken the time to educate parents and students on the importance of life experiences and how rewarding it can be on so many different levels. I think this should be mandatory reading for every parent. We need to let go a little and let our kids find their way in this high pressured educational system and this book gives us a guideline. Bravo Andrea Wien.

New Parent but Still Relevant

Although my son is only eight months old, Andrea gave me a lot to think about for the next 18 years. I believe the culture is shifting on how we educate ourselves and the notion of the gap year is losing its negative stigma and gaining momentum.
Andrea clearly explains all the reasons parents bulk at the idea of a gap year and even made me wish I had done something similar.
I highly recommend this book.
