About the Author
Iain R Webb is an award-winning writer and Visiting Professor of Fashion Womenswear at the Royal College of Art, London. During his career he has been fashion editor of BLITZ, the Evening Standard, Harpers & Queen, The Times and Elle, while contributing to various publications including New Musical Express, The New York Times and VOGUE.

He is the author of several books including Bill Gibb: Fashion and Fantasy, Postcards From the Edge of the Catwalk, As Seen In BLITZ: Fashioning '80s Style and INVITATION STRICTLY PERSONAL. He also works as a curator and recent projects include 'We're Not Here To Sell Clothes' at the ICA, 'You're Ugly and Your Mother Dresses You Funny!' at Paul Smith, Mayfair, 'See Me, Feel Me' at the MoBA Biennale Arnhem and 'Invitation Strictly Personal' at Somerset House.

92 Pages of British Vogue Fashion designs from the 1950's – printed on both sides of the page

[[VIDEOID:bec250f3e3836897aab93234438c8601]]I am attaching a silent flip-through video of the entire color book so you can see the designs for yourself and decide whether or not this coloring book suits your needs.

This is a coloring book of designs hand-sketched from photographs which appeared in British Vogue during the 1950's. They include fashions from Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Chanel. Along with each design image is a short description of the fashion which was taken from the original magazine. This is a book which could have easily had perforated pages and it is a real shame that it did not. You can still remove pages from the book (see below) but perforations would have made it that much easier.

The designs are in sketch form with many open areas which will allow colorists to use their blending and shading techniques. I'm fairly new to those techniques with regards to fashion designs, so I think this will be a good opportunity for me to practice. I wish that there had been some views of the pages during the pre-order period so individuals could see what to expect. I wasn't too surprised given the image on the cover of the book but I think some individuals might be disappointed by the way these designs are rendered compared to other fashion coloring books available.

As usual with hand-drawn designs (especially those which are “sketched”), there are disconnected lines. I generally keep a small nib black gel pen handy to create my own connections or just color on and leave the disconnect as it.

I really did not like that the artist put weird squiggly lines on the lips of some of the models. He may have thought that it provided highlights but I'd rather do that myself. Now some of the designs look there are caterpillars on the models lips. I'll have to think of how to disguise those. Because of this, if I could give the book a 4.5 rating, I would but as I cannot, I always round up.

I love the fashions of this period, so coloring in this book will be fun for me. For my first project, I followed the color scheme mentioned in the blurb (navy and white) using a variety of pencils, gel pens, and markers.

I will provide more detail about the physical coloring book below but here is a quick overview:

92 pages of hand-sketched British Vogue Fashions
Printed on both sides of the page
Pages are heavyweight, white and non-perforated
Sewn Binding
Designs do not merge into the binding
Alcohol-based markers bleed through slightly but noticeably
Water-based markers and India ink pens do not bleed through
Gels pens do not bleed through but require additional drying time
Coloring pencils work extremely well with this paper

The designs in this coloring book are printed double-sided on heavyweight, non-perforated, white paper. The quality of the paper is what saved me from giving this a 4 star rating (along with the lip issue above.) The designs do not merge into the binding area. The binding is sewn, so you can remove pages by simply snipping a few threads to remove a few pages at a time. The book can be forced into a fairly flat position for coloring by breaking the spine.

The coloring book has a removable dust cover. While the front and the back of the actual book have designs which you can color, the publisher missed an opportunity to provide coloring designs on the inside of the dust cover itself. Instead, the inside is a slick and glossy bright pink. Pretty but not as much fun as sketches to color.

I test my coloring books with various medium (I will provide a list in the comments section below for any interested.) Here are the results of my tests:

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page but not as quickly or to the same extent as most paper. Water-based markers, India Ink pens, and gel pens did not bleed through the page. Gel pens required additional drying time as compared to other books. Coloring pencils worked extremely well with this paper. The soft lead pencils went on thick with great coverage. They blended and layered easily. The hard lead pencils had good color and did not dent the back of the page.

Beautiful illustrations and good quality of paper makes this book one of the best fashion coloring books ever! This book is made for the watercolors. the description of each dress helps as the guides to the styles and colors. Love this book and want to color every page!

Stunning! Want more books from other "VOGUE" decades!

This book is absolutely stunning! Beautiful images of fashions from the 50's! Will update with photos later! Would love and hope they plan on books for other era's as well! Vogue started in the late 19th century! So there are more decades left! What I also love about this book is it gives you a description of color and fabric to help with your coloring! I plans to "Google" images for some of these fashions to get a full color look at them for more inspiration!

About the Author
Dr. Walter Nicholson is the Ward H. Patton Emeritus Professor of Economics at Amherst College and a visiting professor at Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida. Throughout his teaching career, Dr. Nicholson has sought to develop in students an appreciation for the value of economic models in the study of important social questions. He also has enjoyed showing students some of the stranger things that economists have sought to model. Dr. Nicholson received his Ph.D. in economics from MIT. Most of his research is in the area of labor economics, especially policy questions related to unemployment. He lives in Naples, Florida and Montague, Massachusetts, where he and his wife enjoy the frequent visits of their eight grandchildren.

Dr. Christopher Snyder is the Joel Z. and Susan Hyatt Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, where he pursues research and teaching interests in microeconomic theory, industrial organization, and law and economics. He is a research associate in the National Bureau of Economic Research, serves on the board of the Industrial Organization Society, and is an associate editor of the Review of Industrial Organization. Snyder received his Ph.D. from MIT. His recent research has appeared in leading economics journals, including the Review of Economics and Statistics and Quarterly Journal of Economics. He lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife, who also teaches economics at Dartmouth, and three daughters.

Not that great

Required for my grad-level micro course. Comprehensive in topical coverage but lacking in examples and depth, and does not explain equations and concepts clearly. I did not find it that useful. (Perloff is so much better but apparently does not have a grad-level book.) The infotrac is worthless - do not pay more to get it. It gives you access to a website with content at the level of Econ 1 (intro college econ).

An awesome text which is not excessively technical

An awesome text which is not too technical. Less advanced than MWG. Less technical (and more readable) than Jehle & Reny (although it must be mentioned that theirs is a bit different approach to microeconomics: Jehle & Reny build on matrices and linear algebra very heavily).
The book is a natural extension to Intermediate Microeconomics and its Application by Nicholson and Snyder.
In my opinion, even students without prior exposure to microeconomics (but possessing decent skills in calculus) will find this book very useful - they might not even need to read the above mentioned prequel.

Maybe my favorite econ textbook

This is probably my favorite economics textbook; the only other one I'd consider would be Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok's "Modern Principles: Microeconomics", which is more of an undergrad (and more "fun") book.

I used this book for my graduate level microecon theory course. About once each chapter I would have to re-read a paragraph or two, but I still found this book to be very good at explaining concepts that were denser than my undergrad courses were. It was a great and necessary accompaniment to my professor's lectures, and it saved my ass a few times. A good highlight is it's explanation of the Slutsky Equation and Shephard's Lemma. Those were big "a ha!" moments for me. I really found the footnotes useful as well, and the end of chapter questions are appropriately challenging. I know other students in my class found Chapter 2, which is on the mathematics of economics, particularly helpful.

Sometimes I'd want a rhetorical and philisophical explanation of a concept, and sometimes I'd want a mathematical one, and this book always seemed to have what I needed.

Probably it's weakest area (for me) is explaining the Envelope Theorem. That wasn't something I really wrapped my head around until I was several chapters into the book. However, this may be because it's introduced very early in the course (and the book), where it's hard to comprehend why the theorem matters to microeconomics.

A review of Magic Molecules

This book is to be commended for its, clarity of thought ,and flowing prose in its treatment of a subject both broad in scope ,and complex in nature. The Author is able to give the reader an accessible overview of the of the most common diseases affecting mankind, and the of the pharmacological approaches used to combat these illnesses in a manner that deftly maneuvers in level from the molecular to the practical. The only reason that I didn't give this book 5 stars is because that I reserve such a rating in this genre for a masterpiece such as "Creating Mind:How the Brain Works"

Highland Lover

Alana Murray's twin sister is missing. When her brothers set out to find their sibling, Alana does what any good sister would do. She follows them, keeping far enough behind so that they can't send her back home. Unfortunately, she gets separated from them and captured by the Gowans, who want to hold her for ransom.

Gregor MacFingal Cameron has left his family in search of a bride. He thinks he's found one and is on his way home to talk with his father when he is captured by the Gowans. He's been in their prison a few days when they toss a child down with him. Gregor thinks the person sharing his cell is no child, but there's no way to be sure.

Working together, Alana and Gregor break out of the prison and start a quest to find Alana's sister. Along the way, they must keep ahead of the Gowans and battle the growing attraction that they feel for each other.

I very much enjoyed Highland Lover. Ms. Howell weaves a tale of adventure and romance that captures the reader and holds them spellbound. Particularly well done is Alana, who is a strong woman who won't be taken advantage of. This was my first Hannah Howell adventure, and it won't be my last. Lovers of historical fiction will enjoy this book very much.

Great reading.

To date, I have enjoyed reading Ms Howell's Highland Murray and Wherelock series. I will be purchasing additional books in this genre. The only problem I have is reading them too fast.

Hannah Howell does it again... great story!

I am a big fan of Hannah Howell's Highland series and was anxiously waiting for this book to come out... it did not disappoint. I really enjoy the fact that she includes characters from previous books in her novels as it makes you feel like the people and families are more real knowing that they continue on, even after their own stories are told. I like how she switches back and forth from telling the stories from a male character's point of view to a female's. This book is not as steamy as some of the previous books in the series (I thought the 3 Murray daughters' stories were much steamier and the plots slightly more involved/complex). But I still thoroughly enjoyed this latest book by Hannah Howell and cannot wait for the next one coming in December 2006. This is a must read for her usual fans and if you are new to the series and have never read them, I highly encourage you to do so, I know you will fall in love and not be able to put them down until you have gotten through the entire series (like me!).

A PURPLE cow stands out no matter how you look at it. Now that is being remarkable. The challenge in today’s overcrowded marketplace is to STAND OUT and become VISIBLE rather than to remain invisible in a market with a multiplicity of similar items from which to choose. To become remarkable means the entrepreneur or enterprise must do something which is, in some way, well, REMARKABLE. The product the business or entrepreneur offers to the world must be packaged through an inventive strategy designed to set their product out in the forefront ahead of the competition. According to Godin, purple cow innovation is more than cutting edge...It’s more than mass advertising...It’s more than a recognizable household name...It’s more than tried and true. Instead, It. Is. Original. Purple cow is offering an item in an inventive, new way. It’s unusual...It’s consistent...It’s fun!..It’s something-you-must-have-because-it-meets-a-need and is absolutely dependable.

Although having a good idea or a useful product is great, most likely, in today’s market that is not enough without the stand-out-from-the-crowd purple cow. The product will remain invisible to the buyer and relatively unknown to the masses. This means businesses must leverage risk by developing something remarkable in order to become visible.

Must Do, Step 1, for ANY Business

There seem to be two camps reviewing this book. One say that is brilliant and their favorite book of all time. The other says the book is shallow and void of original ideas. Both are right...and wrong.

The main idea of the book is spot on. If your business is not unique, it will be invisible. Marketing an invisible business is tough.

To the critics who say the basic idea is simple and therefore not ground breaking, I agree. But Godin manages to clarify a simple, very important idea that most business owners overlook. There is an elegance to his clarity.

Godin writes books that have a single core idea. He writes in a conversational tone. His books are short and readable. By the way, all of Godin's books make great audio books because they are in his conversational voice.

There are two categories of business books. There are the big serious tomes about how somebody saved ABC Corporation from disaster and made billions in the process. And then there are books for the rest of us. Purple Cow is a "rest of us" book. Years after reading the book, I still struggle with developing my own purple cow. It isn't easy.

Great book but buy the old version!

This is a great book, but don't be fooled thinking you need to purchase the "new edition" with the "bonus chapter". The bonus chapter is just a bunch of people who wrote in about their favorite store/coffeeshop/place to hang out. The stories are poorly written and add no value. Buy the book - but buy the bargain ones without the bonus chapter.

A brilliant followup to the Providence Series! It draws you in and keeps you there. A must read!!! Eden & Levi are amazing!

I feel like I say the same thing with every one of Jamie McGuire's books. I love every single one. That is how you know you've found that author. The one that pulls you in and keeps you in their world from the first page. The author that makes you care about her characters and feel like you actually know them. The one that gives you all kinds of feelings about people that aren't real. The author that no matter what she writes, you buy it. You don't even have to read what the book is about, you know it's going to be brilliant. That is Jamie McGuire and her work. That is the type of author that she is.
The Providence Series pulled me in from the start and I loved all three books. I was so excited when I found out she was writing this one about Eden. We fell in love with all of the characters in the first three books and this one was no different. I loved Eden and the way she didn't take crap from anyone. She stood up for herself but knew when to hold back. This family's love for one another is heartwarming and encouraging. We get introduced to Levi in Sins of the Innocent. He's supposed to be bad, Eden's enemy, but he's the complete opposite. I loved the way that Jamie added in her twists and turns, her surprises and holy sh*t moments. Eden is so strong and knows what she has to do. I had a death grip on my kindle and I may have even yelled at it a couple of times, thinking I could somehow change what was happening. It will pull you in and keep you in its grasp until the last page, and even after you're done reading it you'll still be thinking about it.
I was drawn into the fight between Heaven and Hell from the beginning of this series and this book just continued pulling me in. When I got to the end, I kept going back to the page before and the next page trying to find more. I didn't want it to be over, to end. Of course, I never do when it comes to Jamie's books. I hope this isn't the last book for this series, I love these characters too much and I can't wait to see where they go from here. (If there's another one) Thank you Jamie McGuire for giving us such truly magnificent stories, that stay with us long after we've read those last words, "The End."

A really fantastic companion novella.

Sins Of The Innocent is a companion novella to the Providence series by Jamie McGuire. I highly recommend you read Providence, Requiem, and Eden; before reading my review and Sins Of The Innocent.

Sins Of The Innocent takes place about 18 years after the end of the novel Eden. SOTI is told through Eden's POV. Having been born to a Merovingia and a half human/fallen angel; Eden has trained her entire life knowing someday she may need to save the human race. Eden has only one friend, Morgan; her best friend. Eden thinks that she will have a "normal" summer leading up to her first semester at Brown University. That is until Levi, a mysterious and dangerous guy introduces himself. Not able to trust Levi, and not able to get the whole truth from her parents, Eden seeks advice from an old powerful family friend. Given clues to what her true purpose is, Eden has to make a difficult choice. Continue not trusting the one person who she's been taught could destroy her, or trust him, and maybe find out what her truth is.

Wow, this novella by Jamie McGuire was just fantastic. I read the Providence series last spring and when I found out Jamie McGuire was writing this, I was ecstatic. Not only did I really enjoy meeting Eden and Levi, I loved seeing some of my favorite characters from the series years later. In true McGuire form, there were moments that made me laugh, swoon, and that last chapter really got me emotional. I'll leave you with one of my favorite lines: "You remind me why humanity isn’t a waste. My dad says that one is all it takes … and that’s you.”

Another absolute HIT for Jamie McGuire!

Oh dear goodness, is there any genre that Jamie McGuire can’t make a reader fall in love with? Sins of the Innocent is a follow-up novella that allows readers to glimpse into the life of Eden, the product of Jared and Nina’s relationship in the Providence series. Based on the feelings McGuire gave me in the trilogy, I knew I would be in for a heck of a ride, but I never ever could have predicted where the author was going to take me.

“Forgiveness isn’t necessary. You can’t save everyone, Eden.”

I loved that Eden was a younger character who was trying to find her way. She was not only struggling with the normal teenager stuff, but she was dealing with the repercussions of being the Balance Keeper for the universe. I also adored that she was this sassy, kick-butt heroine! She was so strong, and at times cocky, that she stood out among a sea of characters. On the other side of the coin, we had Levi who came with his own backstory of complications. He had this dark, mysterious charm to him. As a reader, I was completely and utterly drawn to him, evil or not. I savored the way that readers got to only see pieces of him, which they then had to put together like a puzzle.

“In the horror show of gods and monsters, I was the star.”

I loved the underlying themes of good versus evil, as well as fate versus our choices in Sins of the Innocent. There was something about the events and they storyline that fascinated me. The book focuses on the consequences faced because of a prophecy made. However, it ultimately was the characters’ intentions and choices that would result in how the prophecy came true. I got lost in the pages and had the hardest time putting the book down. I know that paranormal romances aren’t for everyone, but McGuire is an artist and will make you feel comfortable with the settings and even fall in love.

“It’s incredibly beautiful to watch humans learn. It’s all about learning, Eden. That’s what life is. A hundred years of lessons disguised as experiences. Good and bad.”

I’m so glad that even after six years, McGuire has chosen to revisit these characters. It’s one of those worlds that I fell in love with as soon as I encountered it, and was enthralled even more with the continuation in Sins of the Innocent. This novella is a quick afternoon read, but I promise that it will not disappoint! Jamie, I kind of do want to throw things at you right now, but I can definitely say that I’m looking forward to whatever it is you produce next!

About the Author
Dr. Donald H. Cunningham, professor of English and coordinator of technical and professional communication in the Department of English at Auburn University, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and was founding editor of The Technical Writing Teacher (now Technical Communication Quarterly). He also has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. He is a fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Society for Technical Communication. He was awarded the Society for Technical Communication Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication.

Dr. Thomas E. Pearsall, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and is the founder and first president of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication. Dr. Pearsall is a fellow of both the Society of Technical Communication and the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing. He is listed in Who�s Who in America and the Who�s Who is the World.

Dr. Elizabeth Overman Smith, associate professor, associate head, and coordinator of instructional technology in the Department of English at Auburn University, has worked as a writer, an editor, and a trainer for organizations providing computer-related training. Great book

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This is a great book for someone who is looking to beef up their business writing skills. I really like it as a 'reference' manual. It shows examples of how to write and communicate in the business world, basically what to and what not to say and do.

It is also easy to read and understand, which is a big plus for an educational literary work.

Could use some updating.

This is a good book to give you detailed information on different kinds of writing you might do at an office. The only problem with the book is that it was written in the early 2000s, making for a very boring computer chapter, because they were talking about how to use different programs like we have never seen a computer before. I think that this book needs to be updated, especially the chapter on computers, but other than that, definitely a good resource for everything business related, including reports, resumes, e-mails, memos, letters of all kinds, among other things.

Kirsten Kearney is a games journalist who has written widely on games and gaming over the past 10 years. She has served as the section editor for Guinness World Records: Gamers Edition, and she owns the games media website ready-up.net.
