Best Cookbook for Kids I've Found!

A few years ago, I searched for a kids' cookbook that I could love and that my kids could enjoy and follow easily. I was so surprised by the variety of cookbooks and the poorly written directions they included. In particular, I remember looking at Paula Deen's cookbook for children. The small print, light type, and colored background... I wanted a better cookbook for my kids! For me, cookbooks are inspiring (even if I almost never follow a recipe exactly)! I ended up finding one that I loved-- Kids Cook!, a Williamson Kids Can book that is now back in print. But, there are no photographs in the cookbook. My kids love color and they are not drawn to that cookbook. On the other hand, a new cookbook arrived at our doorstep last week and my kids hovered over it--drinking in the recipes, excited to cook!

That cookbook is Cooking Class by Deanna F. Cook. A few years ago, Storey published two cookbooks for kids about sewing that I like: Sewing School and Sewing School 2. With this cookbook for kids, Storey followed the same format and editing style--which I loved back then and love again with this new cookbook.

Cooking Class is divided into seven sections that cover the basics, meals, snacks, and of course--dessert! The Basics section is what I have found lacking in most kids' cookbooks, but in this one, it is done well. Good tips, good pictures, and even a page on how to clean up! I like that they added two pages on how to fold a fancy napkins and setting the table. I have a feeling that our next holiday meal will have some beautifully folded napkins!

From there, the recipe sections begin. The recipes are divided into 1, 2, or 3 spoons. 1 spoon recipes can be made by kids themselves. 2 spoon recipes might need an older sibling or parent's help. 3 spoon recipes use sharp knives and the oven/stove, so an adult is most likely needed for kids under 10 or 11. My daughters are 9 and 11 and are uncomfortable with the oven and can turn on the gas stove, but usually prefer me to do that.

The recipes are easy to follow and have great pictures which give clear instructions. The reading level (because of the size of the type) is probably 3rd grade and above. I know that my first grade son can read most of the words in these directions, but the size of the type would be a stumbling block for him.

Our first recipe we tried from the cookbook was the grab and go granola bars. I was a little skeptical about how my kids would like them since they aren't baked, but my whole family ended up loving them! I think next time, though, I am going to try and mix the chocolate chips into the mixture and then press into the pan so that the chocolate chips are mixed throughout the bars and aren't just on top.

I suspect that within a few months every recipe in this cookbook will have been tried by my kids!

Aside from the recipes, the cookbook includes some fun stickers, place cards, and conversation questions for the dinner table. These are of high quality and my kids have enjoyed them all.

I think you get the idea... when choosing a great kids' cookbook, this one tops my list! (and has been added to my list of favorite cookbooks.)

This book is so easy to follow it makes me look like the best mom ever! I don't know what I ever did without it! Seriously! Awesome book if you want to teach your kids how to cook. Wonderful homeschool resource.

Cooking Class cookbook

I got this for my 8 year old for Christmas and she loves it. She loves looking through it and finding a recipe for us to try. Also, she's more likely to eat stuff that she normally wouldn't if she's involved in its creation :) I remember my mom getting me my first cookbook which I still have and love. I still use the banana bread recipe! Happy with this sweet cookbook.

Spotlight on a writer of genius

Hesse was one of the truly great writers of the 20th century. And like many highly gifted individuals he was also a troubled soul, tormented by the guilts stemming from his childhood and youth. The Glass Bead Game was his now much neglected masterpiece, his magnum opus in which he worked out the spiritual and intellectual ideals that resulted from his long search for fulfilment. Ralph Freedman takes us on a fascinating journey through Hesse's inner struggles.

Informative But Dated

Revised 3/25/13. This was the first biography of Hesse that I read and at the time found it very informative. It provided ample biographical material to help understand the genesis of his works. I consider it to be the best English language biography of Hesse. The only other one that approaches it is Joseph Mileck's Hermann Hesse: Life and Art which is more an analysis of Hesse's works than biography. However for understanding Hesse's inner life there is no substitute for reading Hesse himself. In the acknowledgements page Freedman makes reference to the use of previously unpublished material, especially letters. Since then (1978) a 20 volume collected German edition of his works has been published (recently made available in paperback in two divisions: ISBN 978-3518062128 and ISBN 978-3518062135) and also the first volume (ISBN 978-3518423097) of a projected 10 volume German edition of his letters. This new edition will supplement rather than repeat the 4 volume German edition already published (ISBN 978-3518098134). Also a remarkable collection of letters between Hesse and his second wife Ruth Wenger (including a short reminiscence by her) has come out (Liebes Herz! Briefwechsel mit seiner zweiten Frau Ruth - ISBN 3-518-41725-8) providing much insight into Hesse's frame of mind for the writing of Steppenwolf. Finally there is a "biography" of Hesse's third marriage to Ninon Doblin by Gisela Kleine: Zwischen Welt und Zaubergarten (ISBN 978-3518378847). I have not entirely reread Freedman's book since my first perusal but have dipped into from time to time for background information. Recently I was disappointed to discover confusion regarding the names of the characters in his discussion of the novel Gertrude. Freedman mixes up Kuhn for Muoth (p. 138). I believe this is a minor mistake that is not indicative of the rest of the work. Also Freedman, through no fault of his own due to lack of relevant primary material at the time of his writing, is necessarily vague about the blossoming relationship with Ninon during the Steppenwolf period, a failure corrected by the Kleine book mentioned above. English readers frustrated with my review because of my references to German language books (all of the ISBN mentioned volumes are available on the Amazon Germany site) have my sympathies. There just aren't any English language biographies of Hesse that are based on recently released material, some of which is significant. A more complete biography probably awaits the publication of all of his letters. Meanwhile the Freedman volume is the one to get in English.

Ralph Freedman ranks with Joseph Mileck, Theodore Ziokowski, and Mark Boulby in his importance to Hesse scholarship. Freedman previously published an important study comparing the fiction of Virginia Woolf, Andre Gide, and Hesse. This biography is a standard against which any future biographies are likely to be judged, composed by a man who has studied the author for many years.

Excellent introduction to the philosophy, method, and procedures of Francois�Baucher, or the French tradition of "riding in lightness" that Baucher developed in the 19th century. Includes a translation of Baucher's "second manner."

Jean-Claude Racinet wrote a few articles in the magazine�Dressage and CT�in 1992-3 on Baucher and his equitation. This series, with some necessary editing for cohesion, has been brought together to create this book.�



Two appendices were added; the first one deals with the validity of Baucherism, in light of the last discoveries of "equine osteopathy," as exposed by Dr. Dominique Giniaux of France; the second is a translation of the very last part of the 12th edition of Baucher's�Methode d'Equitation, dealing with his second "manner." This text has probably never been translated into English, and is of utmost importance. The riders who will endeavor to apply by the letter the progression described by Baucher in this text will, to their surprise, probably accede to a new and higher level of equestrian knowledge.



Born in Paris in 1929, Jean-Claude Racinet is a graduate of St. Cyr, the French West Point, Class of 1950. He was a member of the French contingent in Korea (1950-53), where he was wounded twice. As an officer of the French army, he spent seven years in Tunisia and Algeria (1954-61) and four more years in Europe.�



While he spent most of his army career during the time when the military was getting rid of their horses, he managed, between and during his sojourns overseas, to successfully attend the Superior Equitation Course in the Cavalry School of Saumur (1953-54), winning the title of Champion of Tunisia in open jumping (1956), and to become a member of the Jumping Team of the Military School in Paris (1953).



Riding teacher and trainer as a civilian after 1965, he was more particularly known by his retraining of difficult horses and later as an equestrian journalist by his always witty and sometimes scathing articles in the French equestrian monthlyL'Information Hippique.



In the United States since 1983, Jean-Claude Racinet became a successful teacher, trainer, lecturer, clinician, and author. Xenophon Press published in 1994 his highly popular book�Another Horsemanship, now in its second printing.



Jean-Claude Racinet has devoted his life to the vindication of "L��equitation de Legerete" (riding in lightness), which fosters balance by relaxing the horse - more so his mouth - excluding force in the wielding of the aids. In fact, the very essence of riding in the French Classical tradition.

Achieve lightness...well worth reading...your horse will thank you for it.

This is the second copy of this book that I have purchased, in order to have one to loan out to friends. This book, as well as Another Horsemanship and Total Horsemanship, was a turning point for me in my riding career and has changed my way of riding forever. When I found these books, I was searching for a way to establish a true and light way of riding that allowed me to connect with my horses in a way that was enjoyable to each of us. I had not found it previously and was frustrated with what I was being taught by top trainers and shown at shows. Force, heavy contact, tight nosebands, overworked horses, and extreme strength were not my goals. I desired a partnership with my horse as a willing and happy participant in a connected relationship. This book confirmed my belief that this was possible and immediately resonated with me giving me hope to try something new and different. Through Mr. Racinet's teachings I found so much more. I found the connected and harmonious, truly light, way of riding that I was seeking, and when I found that it opened doors for more advanced movements that I had understood my horses could do...especially so willingly and without force. Riding became fun again, for the horses and for me. What is so different about Mr. Racinet's teachings is that not only can he speak to what true lightness feels like, he can teach it is a systematic, structured way that will work for anyone willing to put in the time and effort to practice and understand. Racinet Explains Baucher logically explains the history and background of many of Baucher's teachings in a way that even a layperson can understand. This book is essential reading for anyone with an open mind who seeks a better relationship with his or her horse. I feel extremely fortunate that Mr. Racinet has left behind these books as part of his legacy so that his knowledge can be continued even though he is no longer with us. If you are searching for a way to achieve true lightness, whether or not advanced dressage is your aim, Mr. Racinet's books provide a systematic way to achieve it that actually works!

A new kind of dressage

The first review says it all, however I would like to add that in modern dressage circles "Baucher" is a bad word. It should not be! Trying to find an instructor who teaches this way is incredibly difficult (I live in the West) and public opinion is often against it. However, I think it's so important to learn about Baucher and his method. It proves for once and for all that contact is NOT needed for collection! I was told over and over that collection couldn't be acheived without heavy contact. To find that there has been another way and that it still exists is wonderful!

This book will be better understood by those who have had some dressage experience since you may not understand the significance of what the author is saying or the terms. Read it anyway! I read this early in my dressage career and when every instructor taught me to pull, pull, pull...I knew that there was another way because of this book. If you do read this you will soon become aware that the "German" method is the main way people and horses are taught dressage. If you have a keen eye, you will watch the horses at the olympics and see that they are not moving very freely. As for the book itself, it is well-written and surprisingly easy to read. It gives concrete instructions to help you work on your own. I have used this book often over the years since an instructor has yet to be found.

An Excellent Interpretation of Baucher

I am so regretful that I only discovered Racinet through his books just after his untimely death while giving a clinic in Germany ... he had lived just one state away from me in the US for many years prior. I came to explore Baucherism more deeply while researching the methods of Nuno Oliveira. Pursuing then other current proponents of Baucher's techniques, I came across Racinet and am very glad I did.

I think it is fair to say his is among the most accessible explanation of Baucherist techniques. As I think anyone who has spent many years in the discipline understands, there are many wonderful equestrians and yet very few wonderful teachers. At a certain level, it becomes quite difficult to articulate the sensations and communications going on between horse and rider. And as soon as we begin to put down the "rules" of a given methodology, we begin to find exceptions; and then the rules become fairly complex algorithms ... and then we need someone to explain them in a manner relevant to our particular context.

For most, it is not enough to simply read Baucher (which of course I highly recommend) - particularly if you are reading a translation from the original French. How much is lost in context via the ocean of time, culture, and then language? But then here is Racinet. He is French, though moved to the US and resided here until the end of his life. So he has a certain appreciation for the subtle insinuations here and there within Baucher's work, and a better point of departure for understanding the culture of the day when Baucher was creating his work. He also understands American culture and communication well enough to move the right meaning from there to here. Moreover, he is never condescending in this process, taking instead the tone of just another fellow student and admirer of our ancient friend, the horse. From his very readable pros, I was able to head myself off from many mistakes which would now seem obvious in retrospect, but which I know I would have committed had I not invested the time with Racinet's work.

If you are passionate about understanding a higher order of "classical" dressage techniques, I would encourage you to begin with Racinet ... but be forewarned: it will change your view of "right", and your style of riding - perhaps at the expense of a few points at your next FEI-sanctioned dressage social. Let them go, and go on to enjoy an aptitude for horsemanship you'll be surprised you didn't know existed until know.

Interesting read...

I had to buy this textbook for my sociology class. I never really care for textbooks for school but in this case it was very interesting. It wasn't like some of the other textbooks that are very dry reading. It's easy to follow and keep up with the chapters and the material that is being given. I thought with the structure and syllabus of my class it fit very well. And although I wouldn't probably read it again it isn't something that I wouldn't recommend anyone else getting if they wanted to.

Promising, Short and Sweet

Carmel Sheehan was raised in an orphanage and as a child of the Irish state felt unworthy of making her own choices about life, career and marriage. As a result she agreed to a loveless marriage to an ungrateful, uncommunicative widower still pining for his first wife.

She continues to live a joyless existence until the day she receives a letter inviting her to Dublin to meet her recently deceased mother’s doctor. It is the start of a new-found confidence and sense of worth for her, as well as a blossoming romance.

I enjoyed this short, easy to read novella with all the components of a good story and look forward to reading more from Jean Grainger. My rating: 3.5

i found this book by accident here on amazon, and what a find!

it's set out like a fast and furious handbook on the elements of style and the major game-changers of the last century. the images are excellent, and many of them would be suitable for framing.

the cover of the book lists several of the 100 ideas that are in the book, but a smattering of my favorites are as follows:

the delphos gown
royals and politicians
photographs and magazines (the image on page 24 by cecil beaton is stunning)
costume jewelry (the image here of coco chanel is beautiful)
the bias cut
surrealism
the fashion show as theatrical spectacle
disposable fashion
low-key luxury

these bite-size sections are the perfect length to whet the appetite, and the images are well selected to accompany each two page topic.

quite simply, this is a wonderful and informative book at a very reasonable price!

Great Brief History on Fashion

If you're looking for a book that gives you a brief overview of many of fashions historical milestones, this is it. Wonderful for anyone interested in divining into fashion and a fun read in general. I do wish some of the entries were more in-depth, but that really isn't the purpose of this book (at least the way it seemed to me), it's really more of a reference or an entree into fashion.

Great for fashion history, not for societal reaction

This book was good, but that was all. It was very vague at some points and did not go into detail. I understand the point of the book was to explain how fashion affected itself but i would have liked to know more about the societal reaction and struggle that some clothes went through. It's a great book for fashion history and turning points in that, but not for culturally. It talked more about the clothes than how they really changed fashion.
