About the Author

Fred B. Newton is director of counseling services and professor of counseling and educational psychology at Kansas State University. He teaches courses in student personnel/student development, counseling theories and practicum, group theories and practicum, peer counseling, leadership training, stress management, and performance enhancement.�

Steven C. Ender is president of Grand Rapids Community College. During his more than 30 years in higher education, Dr. Ender has held numerous teaching, counseling, and administrative positions and has published extensively in refereed journals as well as textbooks. Dr. Ender serves on the Economic and Workforce Development Commission of the American Association of Community Colleges, the Lifelong Learning Commission of the American Council on Education, and the board of the National Junior College Athletic Association as a presidential representative.

Great Book, Bad Publishing for Kindle Version

The content of this book is fine, but I'm really annoyed by the laziness of the book publishers. This is intended for college students, which means when you market a product for its convenience (like an eBook that can be accessed through the Kindle app), you cause nothing but headaches without providing page numbers. This is strictly a publisher decision when these books are released, and it is absurd. "Location numbers" are not helpful for academic citations!

It's an easy read, I can breeze through the chapters with very little difficulty. Concepts are clear, but some of the ideas are pretty much intuitive. There are some helpful diagrams and things if you run into difficulties while communicating, which was interesting.

Classic regurgitated stuff

I would not recommend this book. If you have ever read one of those books that goes something like "Did you know this is a good habit?" then you have read this book. It's very annoying. If you are a teacher looking at this book for a class then please don't. I can honestly say in my class of twenty something people that a maximum of 5-6 actually read it. Most skimmed it and the rest didn't have to read it because everything is common sense.

essential reading for students of twentieth-century Chinese

This book focuses on the interaction of China and Germany between 1928 and 1938. This interaction involved Chinese exports of critical raw materials, such as tungsten and antimony, and imports of arms, military and industrial expertise, as well as ideology and culture. For the first time, this book adds substantially to our fragmentary knowledge of China's relations with Germany in the pre-World War II era. Kirby has produced a first-rate scholarly work, using German, Nationalist Chinese, and English sources, as well as information obtained from personal interviews. This book deserves wide and immediate attention. Nails it...

After grinding through far too many books on "how-to-present-better" books, I've finally found one that exceeds the promise. Scott Berkun, a former Microsoft executive who turned writer and professional speaker, practices what he preaches in his book.

* This book is written for anyone who has to give presentations (public speakers, managers, teachers) - it will benefit novices to veterans - and readers in all for-profit and not-for profit industries.

* This is a quick read - can be read in 1 or 2 sittings

* This is a page turning "how to" book

* It is written in a conversational tone packaged with excellent stories, persuasive tips, good research and "rhythmic" pace

* Author is informed via real world experiences - he is honest, humble and straightforward.

* He shares many usable tips and Do's and Don'ts that will stick (e.g. ask smaller than expected crowd to move up and dense-up; lose your content, ask audience for 10 topics they would like you to address; grab them early with a meaningful title for your presentation)

* Finally, a readable how-to book that delivers as promised...highly recommended.

* Some of my favorite excerpts include:

"...when 100 people are listening to you for an hour, that's 100 hours of people's time devoted to what you have to say. If you can't spend 5 or 10 hours preparing for them, thinking about them, and refining your points to best suit their needs, what does that say about your respect for your audience's time? It says that your 5 hours are more important than 100 of theirs, which requires an ego larger than the entire solar system. And there is no doubt this disrespect will be obvious once you are on the stage."

"Our bodies, sitting around doing little, go into rest mode--and where our bodies go, our minds will follow...with this distressing fact, it's easy to understand why most lectures are slow one-way trips into sedation...If you can stop boredom from happening, and stop doing things that bore people, you're well on your way to having an attentive crowd..."

"A common mistake people make is to shrink onstage. They become overly polite and cautious. They speak softly, don't tell stories, and never smile. They become completely, devastatingly neutral. As safe as this seems, it is an attention graveyard."

"By being enthusiastic and caring deeply about what you say, you may provide more value than a low-energy, dispassionate speaker who knows 10 times more than you do. You are more likely to keep the audience's attention, which makes everything else possible."

" The easiest way to be interesting is to be honest. People rarely say what they truly feel, yet this is what audiences desire most. If you can speak a truth most people are afraid to say, you're a hero. If you're honest, even if people disagree, they will find you interesting and keep listening. Heavy on being a fun, cool read, light on take aways

Having seen this book recommended on a blog by a young professor, I started out with high hopes. The many good reviews set my hopes even higher. Alas, this book lacks a clear message and suffers from poor organization, goes off topic very often and quite early on. Not much to learn here. Look elsewhere. I rarely say this for a book but I wish I could return it. I have read about half of it, I will only finish it as a formality.

It's Scott's Fault!

Public speaking is one of those things that people fear the most. So they tell me. My first opportunity to speak to a large corporate crowd happened in 1998. Our firm had just created a new product and service offering. With only a small 6 month trial period, I stood in the basement of a large retail chain's corporate headquarters. Stood there prepared to deliver a top-notch roll out to all the Executive level leaders and store Managers affiliated with the company.

There were only a few hundred in attendance, but it felt like thousands.

I was ready - I had a robust yet embarrassingly dull PowerPoint presentation and my notes safely on the podium in front of me. (That's when tragedy dashed my hopes of a stellar presentation.) An executive who was not happy with the illumination of the projector ordered all house lights off. "Click" - no notes. I became only a voice behind the podium. A shadow of the presenter I had hoped to be. Lost - I knew that the show must go on. An it did - painfully so.

Many of my speaking blunders could have been avoided if Scott had written, Confessions of a Public Speaker a decade or so earlier. I blame him for that moment in 1998. However, I also must give him credit for writing one of the funniest, most complete books on the triumphs and tragedies of a life spent sharing ideas with others.

Confessions of a public speaker should be read by anyone who must someday walk the plank and stand in front of a crowd. Whether it's just a few people or an auditorium filled with eyes, this book is a must read if you would like to avoid a lot of pain and learn to laugh at yourself.

Story after story the raw, exposed nature of his speaking life is easy to relate to. He's a great writer and excellent speaker. He is also crazy in a stupid kind of way. That makes his book all the more real and relatable. Scott is the kind of writer that makes coffee taste even better. He holds nothing back in his encouragement for us all to speak and offers practical tips to overcome almost every kind of stage dilemma.

His book starts with a disclaimer. I feel its appropriate to my review.

About the Author

Gary W. Cordner is Professor Emeritus at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and a Commissioner of CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies). He is Senior Research Associate with the Police Foundation and Senior Police Advisor for the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP), U.S. Department of Justice, in Ukraine, and has been associated with the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing since its inception. Cordner joined the Department of Criminal Justice at Kutztown University in 2008, after teaching for 21 years at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), including five years as Dean of the College of Justice & Safety. At EKU he also founded and directed the Regional Community Policing Institute and the International Justice & Safety Institute. Before joining the faculty at EKU, he worked as a police officer and police chief in Maryland and taught at Washington State University and the University of Baltimore. He maintains the Modern Policing Blog at https://gcordner.wordpress.com/, which comments on news and developments in the policing world.

Cordner is a past member of the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, the Kentucky Criminal Justice Council, and the Lexington/Fayette County Civil Service Commission; founding editor of Police Quarterly and past editor of the American Journal of Police; and past president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). He has published several books and numerous articles and book chapters on community policing, police administration, and related topics. He has received the Academy Fellow Award, Bruce Smith Sr. Award, and Outstanding Paper Award from ACJS, in addition to the O.W. Great Book- but needs better copyediting

This book offers an excellent overview of many aspects of psych assessment. It was very helpful in reviewing for quals- but watch out! There are several errors in this book! The specificity of a test is incorrectly explained, as is MMPI-2 TRIN interpretation. Some wierd formatting inconsistencies pop up in the Rorschach section... I don't recommend this book for 1st year grad students who are learning this material for the first time because they won't catch the errors and may learn things incorrectly.

Excellent resource for practicing clinincians and students

Having read/reviewed numerous 'handbooks,' this is probably the best of the breed. Groth-Marnat has done an excellent job of covering the main assessment techniques used by clinicians to psychologically evaluate patients. Clinicians will find this handbook indispensable, and, in fact, (I predict) will keep it parked on their desk for ready access. Students will find the book thorough, informative and practical. If you are serious about psychological assessment, this one is a 'must-have.' You won't be disappointed.

DAVID STEPHENS is Visiting Professor of Education at the Education Research Centre, University of Brighton, and was until recently Professor of International Education at Oslo University College in Norway. For the past 30 years he has lectured and researched in international education in universities in east and west Africa and in the United Kingdom. His co-authored publications include Doing Educational Research in Developing Countries: qualitative strategies (Falmer Press, 1990), Questions of Quality: primary education and development (Longman, 1990) and Children as Partners for Health (Zed Books, 2000).
