If you're looking for a clear, easy to understand work, this is not for you. It seems the author fluctuates between writing for a population that is well versed in statistical understanding, to one that is just learning concepts and terms. The reader ends up being tossed around with too much information at times, and at other times too little information. There are many, many better works on these topics.

About the Author
Hal Blumenfeld is Professor in the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. He has taught neuroanatomy at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia Universities using the approach of Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases, which the students greeted with highly favorable feedback. He recently received the prestigious Francis Gilman Blake Award, as the most outstanding teacher of medical sciences at the Yale School of Medicine, and the Dreifuss-Penry Epilepsy Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology. He has also been awarded several major grants (from the National Institutes of Health, and private foundations) to pursue his research, which focuses on epilepsy as a model system for investigating consciousness. Current projects include neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and behavioral experiments in animal models of epilepsy, and direct application to human patients. His clinical training included an internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, a residency in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in Epilepsy at Yale University School of Medicine. He studied Bioelectrical Engineering at Harvard University, then earned a Ph.D. (in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics) as well as his M.D. at Columbia University.

Buy It. Just Do It.

I am a second year medical student in California. I have recently boarded the struggle bus that is neuroanatomy. I have never taken neuroanatomy prior to medical school, and to say its overwhelming is an understatement. Another note - I own the Haines Atlas(9th E), this text, FA, and Firecracker. Professional students have a limited budget and need to find the most high yield resources. This is the one.

I never usually buy textbooks because they suck. This is the anti-textbook. It actually is designed to be read, in order, and it is engaging, relevant, and interesting. The pictures are bomb. It constantly checks your understanding, references other section of the text (THAT MAKE SENSE AND ARE RELEVANT), and everything is clinically relevant. Finally, a book written by a clinician for clinicians, not researchers or academics. Purchase it. Read it. See how it effortlessly owns all other texts and actually pushes you to GET neuroanatomy to HELP PATIENTS, not uselessly memorize that the trigeminal system has 4 nuclei, or that there are 5 descending motor tracts, or remember some research extraneous bullcrap that fills the volume of much of our medical textbooks.

I bought this book at the beginning of the term and didn't open it until I got desperate halfway through.

Other than the drugs, cancer, and histology&pathology sections of the course, this book had everything. It is laid out better, it is integrated from clinical presentation, to exam, imaging, diagnosis and discussion.

I read the book from cover to cover, and went from failing miserably to passing with better than class average. If you read the book as it is laid out, you will build on the concepts and it will introduce key points at relevant times. By the end, you will be able to think through the anatomy instead of trying to just remember a bunch of factoids.

The imaging in the book is amazing and well explained, and the cases are real. The language is very descriptive, and the illustrations and figures are great. The cranial nerves and blood supply chapters are highlights.

It shouldn't be your ONLY Neuro book, but you will use it every day even after reading it.

If I ever see Dr. Blumenfeld, I'm going to hug his leg like a little child.

Very useful

Book is very well written, easy to follow, very clinically oriented as the title suggests. It does not have the details of a full neuroscience textbook the way the Purves or Kandel books do. As a medical student you need the more detailed neuroscience part also. Still, this is the 'go to' book for clinical explanations in neurology/neuroanatomy. What I don't like about this book has to do with the publisher, not the book: After paying over a hundred Dollars for the book you only get two years of online access, after that they want you to pay an extra $30 for additional two year access, seems like a rip off.

Luke Him Sau/Lu Qianshou (1904–1991) is best known internationally and in China as the architect of the iconic Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai. One of the first Chinese students to be trained at the Architectural Association in London in the late 1920s, Luke’s long, prolific and highly successful career in China and Hong Kong offers unique insights into an extraordinary period of Chinese political turbulence that scuppered the professional prospects and historical recognition of so many of his colleagues.

Global interest in China has risen exponentially in recent times, creating an appetite for the country’s history and culture. This book satiates this by providing a highly engaging and visual account of China’s 20th-century architecture through the lens of one of the country’s most distinguished yet overlooked designers. It features over 250 new colour photographs by Edward Denison of Luke’s buildings and original archive material.

The book charts Luke’s life and work, commencing with his childhood in colonial Hong Kong and his apprenticeship with a British architectural firm before focusing on his education at the Architectural Association (1927–30). In London, Luke was offered the post of Head of the Architecture Department at the newly established Bank of China, where IM Pei’s father was a senior figure. Luke spent the next seven years in the inimitable city of Shanghai designing buildings all over China for the Bank before the Japanese invasion in 1937 forced him, and countless others, to flee to the proxy wartime capital of Chongqing. In 1945 he returned to Shanghai where he formed a partnership with four other Chinese graduates of UK universities; but civil war (between the Communists and Nationalists) once again caused him and others to uproot in 1949. Initially intent on fleeing with the Nationalists to Taiwan, Luke was almost convinced to stay in Communist China but decided finally to move to Hong Kong. There, for the third time in his life, he had to establish his career all over again. Despite many challenges, he eventually prospered, becoming a pioneer in the design of private residences, schools, hospitals, chapels and public housing.

A fascinating study of an "unknown" talent in architecture

With the book "Luke Him Sau: China's Missing Modern," author Edward Dennison gives the reader more than just a biography of an important but relatively unknown Chinese architect. Its pages also fit Luke Him Sau into the panorama of China's twentieth-century evolution from a populous but lesser nation, to a totalitarian state, to whatever it became late in the century. All of this is seen through the experiences of the book's central figure, Luke. His life was all the more remarkable given the conditions in which he and his family often had to live.

Luke is part of China's "missing" modern because his major contributions to the development of architecture in China were "erased from history," intentionally ignored for many decades because of his decision to leave China after takeover of the country by the Communists.

His life was profoundly influenced by the complicated and dynamic changes taking place, especially in China, during the first half of the 20th century. This book relates not only how these changes affected his career, but also his personal life, since he suffered the effects of politics, war, and destruction like everyone else.

Born in the British colony of Hong Kong, Luke was the son of a successful businessman with a high regard for classical education. When Luke began his study of architecture, it was regarded as a lower and included branch of engineering. He received his architectural training from Western sources, first as an apprentice with a British architectural firm and then through further study in London at the Architectural Association. His years in London coincided with the development of modernism in architecture in the Western world.

As he was finishing his training in London, at 25 years of age, he was offered the opportunity to head the newly formed architectural department of the Bank of China. He produced designs for numerous branch banks and associated structures. His most well-known project is arguably the Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai.

Luke was a pragmatic and practical architect, able to combine the best features of Eastern and Western design. Much of his work served public needs, from banks and other commercial buildings to high density housing.

A plethora of photographs of Luke's completed projects are in the book, as well as many floor plans. It also works as a coffee-table book -- it's almost as interesting to look through as to read.

A minor quibble is that it would have been useful to have some maps included, particularly in the first chapter which provides historical context to China's entry into the 20th century. Also, the Chinese names get a bit confusing at times, but there's no solution to that.

Interesting take on a biography...

When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure if it was a coffee table book, a biography, or something else. However, I found that the book is a very effective visual biography - plenty of photos enmeshed within the work itself as opposed to a "traditional" biography where the images are all on center pages.

I really like the way that the author integrates the images with the subject material; it lends itself to easy absorption and understanding of the presentation, and is a very effective tool.

The only challenge I had with the work was that I am totally unfamiliar with Chinese names, and therefore I struggled, but for someone that understands more about Chinese history & is relatively familiar with the naming conventions & structures, this book will indeed be a wonderful addition to the history on this period.

I greatly enjoyed the work, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the architectural history of the era and the region. It's a fascinating work and a great addition to the historical literature on the topic.

more a biography than a showcase of Sau's architecture

This is an interesting book, and provides insightful background into a tumultuous period of time, and its impact on Chinese architects (including Sau, whose life is less "representative" of such architects, and more "illustrates how tumultuous and unique everyone's paths were at that point in time").

That said, I personally had been hoping for many pictures of Sau's buildings, and although many of those were included, this picture is definitely more of a biography than a coffee-table-architecture-inspiration book. It has about as much text as pictures (maybe 50% of each), and the pictures it DOES include are often images of Sau at various phases of his life, or places he stayed / places he visited / pictures of his family, rather than "buildings he designed." The latter are included, but maybe... 20%(?) of the pictures, so they're in there, but not the primary focus.

This book will benefit students of history and/or architecture more than people just looking for a coffee-table book of pretty or interesting buildings.

A fascinating account of life with the "son of the Messiah."

Nansook Hong's is a compelling account of her life as the longsuffering wife of Hyo Jin Moon, Reverend Sun Myung Moon's eldest son. The book is a must read for anyone who is interested in the psychology of religion, or in the plight of batterred women. Don't be put off by negative reviews from members of Reverend Moon's Unification Church. As a former Unificationist myself, I especially recommend this book to anyone who is connected with the Unification movement in any way. Those of us who have witnessed the violent outbursts of certain members of the Moon family firsthand will have no trouble in recognizing the truth of Nansook's account. The Unification Church is not an entirely evil organization, but it has more than its share of problems, and it has been sweeping them under the carpet for far too long. I hope that Nansook's book will open the members' eyes and help bring about much-needed changes. Nansook has been greatly wronged by Reverend Moon and his movement. I hope that they will be big enough to concede as much. I was sickened by the hostile campaign launched against Nansook by the church following her departure, but I understand that this ill-advised campaign had apparently not been approved by Reverend Moon himself. I like to think that Reverend Moon is a sincere man, even if his theology is unsound. I congratulate Nansook on her escape and on her willingness to tell the truth, and I wish her well in her new life.

Candid, moving and heart wrenching

Born and raised in the Unification Church, those of us whom have left to seek a higher level of existance can relate to the trauma of leaving a religious cult. Those on the outside can finally begin to understand the ties that bind in such misuses of faith. Ms. Hong's account is both believable and horrifying, in that she accurately relates events of her fourteen years of dedication to a monster of an abusive husband and father and mother-in law, and bares her soul to all in a noble effort to dispell the mask this family hides behind. Some may view her as a greedy, vengeful woman, looking for some means to get back at the Moons for their terrible abuse, but as an insider, I say bravo for her courage, something so many ex-members have not been able to muster. I only hope that this will be the beginning of a passage out of darkness for so many members of the Unification Church, who, in their blind faith to the Moon family, have lost so much of themselves along the way. For all those who have been wavering on the fringes of the church, too afraid to leave, but too confused to stay, may this be the push they need to find help and break away. Ms. Hong has an important message for anyone who yearns to understand more about this opulent family, claiming to be the messiah. She is neither vindictive, nor greedy. Ms. Hong tells the TRUTH behind all this betrayal, something the members THOUGHT they had found all along.

Rev. Moon: A Life in Diametric Opposition to His Teachings

Nansook Hong's insider account of life under the same roof as Sun Myung Moon and his wife and children reveals the magnitude of the fraud perpetrated by Moon, who teaches his followers to remain totally abstinent until they are married by him. Even after marriage they must often endure additional waiting periods, undergo a bizarre sexual ritual (the "3-Day Ceremony") and put up with lengthy separations from their spouses, all at the express commandment of Sun Myung Moon. They regard these deprivations as virtuous and a necessary part of building the Kingdom of Heaven. But, as Nansook Hong reveals in this devastating tell-all account, Sun Myung Moon does not live up to his own teachings. He has frequent affairs, which he rationalizes as "providential", that is, mandated by God. He tolerates the same behavior in his children and merely seeks to conceal it from public knowledge. He forbids his followers from using drugs, yet turns a blind eye to his own children's drug abuse. He frequently visits gambling casinos in Las Vegas and claims that somehow by doing so he is spiritually elevating the other gamblers. Nansook Hong's brave book tears away the facade and reveals the rot at the core.
