About the Author

Toby Hemenway is the author of the first major North American book on permaculture, Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories at Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces. A career change followed, and Toby and his wife spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was associate editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. He teaches permaculture and consults and lectures on ecological design throughout the country. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He is available for workshops, lectures, and consulting in ecological design.

He lives in Sebastopol, California.

Lots of info with tables, glorious tables!

What I really love about this book is how much Mr. Hemenway goes into the *reasons* that these methods work. Call me obsessive, but I like authors to provide a good reason their techniques work and not just say "OMG, look at this harvest, just do exactly what I do!" Mr. Hememway gives us beautiful, well-though out tables of different nutrients certain plants accumulate, what kinds of bugs they attract, plants that can tolerate drought or provide mulch on the spot, plants that have "spiky" roots that break up tough top-soil and plants that can provide structure or shade to other plants. It's about using the attributes of different vegetation to do the work for you in a way that doesn't adversely impact the land. Armed with this information, you can create your own "guilds" and areas of companion plants that work best for your location. Outside of a textbook, this is the most complete information on gardening I have ever come across. The author even presents the downsides of the methods in, what I feel, is a very even-handed manner. No one style fits every need and Mr. Hemenway addresses that. This is my favorite gardening book, period.

Truly Amazing Book

I knew literally nothing about Permaculture gardening when I bought this book - my mother mentioned it to me and said to check it out, so I came to Amazon where the description intrigued me......fast forward 3 weeks later and my front water guzzling lawn has now been sheet mulched in preparation for a wonderful, sustainable, garden, and I have 5 baby chickens being delivered next week!

I'm not kidding when I say that this book was transformational in my views on gardening - I live in the city with very limited space, and our lawn was the best in the neighborhood. I have a raised bed for a garden in the back, and did produce some good veggies, but not near enough to eliminate buying any items at the grocery store. My first 10 minutes with this book I learned what I was doing wrong in my raised bed - and as I dug deeper it was one "Aha!" moment followed by another. I am a scientist, and I can't believe none of this had ever occurred to me!

The book is very in depth and gives wonderful examples with specific plants (not just general concepts) - the only thing I would have liked to see more of was pictures of actual permaculture gardens. I'm a very visual person and like to have something to imitate when designing my own project, so I'm still searching for design examples to incorporate (once again with specific plants).

Just know that if you get this book you're going to be inspired to make some drastic changes in your landscape - as evidenced by my "Bomb Proof Sheet Mulched" lawn - the recipe in the book for this was extremely helpful! I will admit that my first initial thought upon opening the book was - oh no, this is too in depth and not being a professional gardener, I'm never going to understand - trust me when I say, pick a chapter that sounds interesting to you and start there - that is what I did, and it migrated to many of the other chapters and just kept going!

Fun Adventures

Originally, I bought this book because the name was spelled like my son's. Anything to get your child interested in reading, right! He loved the stories. Also, this is a great middle grade series for boys. Some of the girls enjoy them too. The adventures are fun.

This textbook written by Stephen Wolfram is an essential for those who have Mathematica 10. I have done a review and gave my recommendation to Hands-on Start to Wolfram Mathematica by Cliff Hastings, Kelvin Michio, and Michael Morrison earlier this year and now Wolfram Media has added this to the collection. Stephen Wolfram is the founder and president of Wolfram, the publisher of Mathematica. Wolfram is an excellent teacher and textbook writer in addition to being a programming genius who brought forth Mathematica, the premier computation software package out there.

He begins by saying The Mathematica Handbook which was discontinued in 2007 with the fifth edition because at 1500 pages had reached the limit for a hardbound handbook. Wolfram writes that the current edition, 10.3, would have to be 50,000 pages and be equivalent to the Encyclopedia Brittanica in length. Much too much for a reference manual. Wolfram says that all the information is in the Help section of the program. Mathematica has the most extensive on-line documentation of any major software program.

He goes through most of the program giving an overview of the programs features. He gives examples which are supplemented by professional illustrations. He lingers on the newer areas Mathematica addresses. That is, features added since the fifth edition from 2007. He doesn't spend too much time on pure mathematics--the Hands-on Introduction by Hastings, et al. covers that nicely. Also, old copies of the fifth edition of the Mathematica Handbook are still valid. Wolfram never throws away anything. He does simplify a few of the math functions, however. On page 295 he includes a chapter on "What We Haven't Discussed." This chapter mentions topics such as User Interface Construction, Function Visualization, Geometry, and "The Computational Universe". The Computational Universe is the title to Stephen Wolfram's bestseller, A New Kind of Science, 2002. Wolfram does appreciate the value of editing keeping An Elementary Introduction to 324 pages.

Wolfram's Introduction is extremely readable and the author does say a 12-year-old, sixth-grader, would be able to use his manual, as well as any adult. If you get the Home Edition of Mathematica 10.3 you should buy these two books. For textbooks, these are priced as any soft-back book would be, not like a super-expensive college textbook. I recommend Wolfram's Introduction to the Wolfram Language highly.

Excellent Introduction even for Experienced Programmers

I'm not new to programming. I've written plenty in assembly, C,C++,C#, python, ruby, MATLAB, etc. The Wolfram language is like nothing I've encountered before, and I found this book useful even for a more seasoned programmer like myself. Symbolic programming, and the wolfram language, forces you to think differently about writing code (for() loops are and should be discouraged), and this is a most excellent and comprehensive introduction. It's also quite gentle, variables and functions and other low-level structures aren't even introduced until quite late in the book. I highly recommend this affordable and excellent text for anyone interested in learning mathematica or the wolfram language.

Welcome Addition

There is a wealth of information online for the Wolfram language. In fact, there is so much that it is sometimes daunting to sift through everything to get to what you want. This book provides you with a starting point to indicate in which direction you might want to begin your exploration. For new users, it is a good place to start.learning the current version of the language. Keep in mind that (like many languages) this a dynamic product and that additions are always around the corner. Online is the final destination for keeping up to date..If you're using an older version, some things in this book do not exist..

Christmas porn

It really pains me to say this; but, Santa Baby is short on story line and character development. Jennifer Crusie's novella, "Hot Toy" saved this volume from a one star rating; however, even this piece was not quite up to Crusie's usual rollicking good fun standards. If it were stand alone piece, I would probably have given the novella 3 stars.

Lori Foster and Carly Phillips really disappointed me though and dragged the book down irretrievably. Foster's "Christmas Bonus" lacked everything but sex, of which it had way too much. And Phillips' "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" was so unbelievable that even the sex fell flat.

All in all, I was thoroughly disappointed and saddened that Crusie's name is linked to this book. All three authors are much better writers than what was delivered by this book. Save your money and read some of their other works such as, Faking It by Jennifer Crusie.

I really wanted to love this book, but the truth is, it's just OK.

Jennifer Crusie writes an action/spy novella In Hot Toy. Trudy is sent out on Christmas Eve to purchase the latest Hot Toy for her nephew. Of course the toy isn't in stock as everyone wants one. While going through other shelves hoping for a misplaced toy, she runs into a guy she dated 3 times. She thought he was the one. He never called back. The two get mixed up in spy game when they toy she finds contain secret Chinese codes. I thought her's was the best as it was entertaining and the couple's relationship was beleivable. Plus there are quite a few laughs thrown in. If it was just Jennifer Crusie's story I had to rate I would probably give it a 4.

In Lori Fosters Christmas Bonus you have Maggie who has recently taken over her fathers company upon his death. Eric is the employee everyone thought would take over the company. Eric and Maggie both have loved eachother secretly since they met. Eric stumbles upon some evidence of Maggies feelings and decides to act on it. I thought the plot was good, but the story just didn't live up to all it could have been.

In Carly Phillips Naughty Under the Mistletoe you have Toni, a woman who decides she is going to make the moves on her soon to be ex-boss at the Christmas Party. She ends up kissing his twin instead. I am a Carly Phillips fan and this story just fell flat. The couple fall in love after a one night stand. I just couldn't buy it.

These are 3 quick easy reads. Each has entertaining value, but it might be a book you want to check out at the library or borrow from a friend instead of buy.

Enjoyable seasonal anthology....

SANTA, BABY contains one phenomenal new novella by Jennifer Crusie and two reprints from Lori Foster and Carly Phillips. See what happens when Christmas means romance is in the air....

A Major MacGuffin is the "Hot Toy" this Christmas in Jennifer Crusie's phenomenal new novella. Trudy Maxwell is determined to find a Major MacGuffin for her nephew, Leroy, this Christmas Eve after her dad forgets to buy him one. After all, Evil Nemesis Brandon has one, toxic waste packets and all. Trudy is determined that Leroy won't suffer the same heartbreak she and her sister suffered every year when Santa's gifts "fell off the sleigh". Unfortunately, Trudy soon finds herself embroiled in the midst of international espionage and she'll have to decide whether to trust Nolan Mitchell who stole her heart and dumped her several months earlier.

Jennifer Crusie is the master at writing a humorous romance! "Hot Toy" will have the reader laughing out loud nonstop as the antics of the characters are hysterical. The interplay between Trudy and Nolan is funny, but Trudy's conversations with her sister, Courtney, steal the show. The visual images described by Ms. Crusie are so uproariously vivid that one can easily see the carnage of the gingerbread men and the gumdrops sliding off of the roof of the gingerbread house! This reviewer can't remember when she has laughed so hard. Thank you, Ms. Crusie, for a story that puts humor into the entire "Hot Toy" chaos.

Lori Foster's "Christmas Bonus" is about an office romance. Maggie Carmichael inherited her father's business when all she really wanted was her father's right hand man, Eric Bragg. Unfortunately, Eric has been distant ever since Maggie became his boss. Will love blossom as a "Christmas Bonus" this year for Maggie and Eric?

Lori Foster excels at writing a steamy romance. "Christmas Bonus" is definitely a "feel-good" sort of story that is perfect for the holidays. The sexual attraction between Maggie and Eric is never in doubt. Most of the development of their relationship was believable but this reviewer was a bit irritated by comments made by Eric later in the book as it tainted the entire romance. If one eliminates those statements by Eric, then "Christmas Bonus" is an enjoyable holiday tale.

Carly Phillips puts a new twist on an old theme in "Naughty Under the Mistletoe". Toni Larson intends to seduce Stephan Corbin but finds herself with his twin, Maxwell. Will their one night of being "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" bloom into so much more or will their own insecurities get in the way?

Carly Phillips manages to pack a lot of emotional depth into such a short story. Both Toni and Maxwell have their own set of insecurities but each opens up to the other over an unusual game of pool. The blossoming of their romance after such a short period of time is surprisingly believable.

SANTA, BABY stands out as a superb anthology based on the strength of the Jennifer Crusie novella. For "Hot Toy" alone, this reviewer strongly recommends this anthology as I laughed until I cried over this story. Lori Foster and Carly Phillips offer two decent seasonal stories but fans of both should be cautioned that these are both reprints. SANTA, BABY proves to be an enjoyable seasonal anthology that should please fans of Ms. Crusie in particular.

This is an extraordinarily valuable book for anyone interested in muscle physiology, kinesiology and electromyography.
It is the most comprehensive book ever produced on the physiology, research and application of sEMG.
The author John Basmajian founded the International Society of Electromyography and Kinesiology (ISEK)and about five other professional biomedical societies as well.
Basmajian's pioneering work with sEMG and with EMG biofeedback dates back to the late fifties and his early work with iEMG (intramuscular or needle) EMG was published in Science magazine.
Carlo DeLuca is a brilliant researcher, one of the world's current leaders in the field, now that Basmajian has attained Emeritus status (McMaster University.)
If you work with pain, physical therapy, physiatry, biofeedback, kinesiology, you can't go wrong with this book. I've heard that a new edition is in the works.
Basmajian also did a classic biofeedback book as well.

Very good, couldn’t put down

I prefer reading romances where the heroine is not the stereotypical PA or secretary or jewellery designer not that I have anything against them. However, there are women astronauts and neurosurgeons and entrepreneurs and I am sure they too have romance in their lives! And I hate it when romance novels are filled with stories where women’s career or profession is non-prime. Anyways that is one of my pet peeve. Which brings me to this novel.

The heroine is a well-educated successful professional! That sold the book for me. The heroine is a big talker, does not pull punches and is pretty determined when she sets her mind to it and the hero had his work cut out. The story is well-written and the narration is excellent. It was funny in places.

Last but not the least, I loved the locale. If there was one thing I disliked it was the fact that the heroine is no good at anagrams! LOL! Read and enjoy.

I chose this rating because the story was just okay. Although I enjoy this author, there are several errors such as typos, terminology, and/or geographical. I'm going to say it (geographical and terminology errors) could be a direct result of the author being British.

When she refers to the heroine being in Las Vegas, she has the Americans in which the hero and heroine interact with speaking in British slang (such as the use of the word "Mate" referring to friend). In addition, the author referred to someone flying from Arizona to Phoenix but Phoenix is the city located in the state of Arizona. There was also the use of the word escalator instead of elevator. This could also be a British terminology or typo. Those are a few of the errors that were distracting to me as the reader.

Not to sound like a Negative Nancy, I did like the plot as well as the characters. I think with a good editor and more oomph it will be a great story. I will read this story again and I would recommend as long as the purchaser or reader takes into consideration the issues I've pointed out.
