A New Comic Reader's Perspective
By Ryan
When DC announced they were rebooting their line of comics, I thought, "this is the time to get into comics, right when everything is starting fresh and I can atleast get my footing somewhere." I've always wanted to read comics and get into them, as I've always been a fan of the greats like Batman, Superman, etc, but never really knew where to start. The new reboot, The New 52, allowed me to start somewhere and move forward without being overwhelmed.
So, one of the new books I picked up was Huntress: Crossbow at the Crossroads. Huntress was a character I've known about for some time, a rebellious vigilante, who instead of taking villains into custody, handles them by her own hand, usually ending their lives. So, I knew she'd be pretty awesome. When I saw this new mini-series collected into the graphic novel, I knew I'd have to pick it up and give it a read just to see how she'd be portrayed.
First and foremost, the art is great. Marcus To did a great job with the panels and details. Everything was drawn wonderfully and the battle scenes were fantastic. I also really enjoy Guillem March's cover art throughout the novel. Huntress is portrayed beautifully in this book. But besides the art, I thought that storyline was also great.
Since I'm new to DC Comics, I don't know what to expect or what not to expect, but I thought the storyline involving Huntress returning to Italy to end human trafficking was really good. The more she moved forwards into taking down her enemies, the more she found out and the more people were involved. I won't go into full details, as I don't want to spoil it. But, the entire thing showed how Huntress can be outside of Gotham City, but still kick major butt.
I definitely recommend picking this up if interested or debating it!

The Huntress is back!
By Kid Kyoto
The Huntress is one of those comic characters who's been revised and retconed so many times it's hard to say what she should be. At her heart she's a skilled, confident heroine just a bit more violent than Batman. She was introduced in the 70s as the grown daughter of the original Batman and Catwoman carrying on her father's mission. In the 80s her history was erased and she became a Mafia princess fighting to redeem her family name. Since then she's been introduced and reintroduced several times, each time with slight changes, no one seemed to know what do with her.
Now she's back in DC's latest reboot in a story a copywriter might call 'ripped from the headlines'.
As the Arab Spring hits a thinly-veiled version of Libya, a dictator is preparing to go into exile in Italy and funding his retirement by trafficking women into the EU. Enter the Huntress.
Writer Paul Levitz delivers a pretty straightforward crime and adventure story, other than the Huntress' costume there's nothing really superheroic about it. The threats and the heroine are all human. But it's well-done with some neat twists and excellent art by Marcus To. Whether he's drawing yachts, sports cars, motorcycles or medieval palaces he makes them all look great. And he does some of the best martial arts and gymnastics action I've seen in a while. His version of the Huntress is always in motion, jumping, leaping, kicking. Even when she's standing still she seems tense and poised for action. He'd be perfect for Batman, Daredevil or other action heroes.
It ends with a slight twist, setting up the Huntress' further adventures. It will delight some readers, annoy others and confuse more than a few but it really had no impact on my enjoyment.
Crossbow at the Crossroads is a good quality action story and worth picking up.

Crossed feelings
By Sam Quixote
On a mission in Italy to stop a shipment of illegal guns leaving the port of Naples, Helena Wayne (I'm not sure if that's her surname in this book as it's never stated but if this is Earth 2 then that's right) aka Huntress stumbles across a human trafficking operation where young girls from countries going through the Arab Spring are being taken from their families and sold into sex slavery. Incensed, Huntress sets out to bring the perpetrators to justice, crossbow style!
I've never read a book with Huntress as the lead but after reading this I thought she was a pretty interesting character. Clever, a little bit cheeky, and downright ruthless, Huntress held my attention for the whole book, rooting for her every step of the way.
Besides some plot holes (that I won't go into lest I be accused of that most horrific of crimes: "spoilers") - and the even bigger problem of why Huntress even bothers with a mask, you can clearly identify who she is with it on - "Crossbow at the Crossroads" is a decent read with a strong female lead taking down some deserving villains. The fact that the villains are based in reality makes it easier to root for Huntress; nobody reading this is going to empathise with human traffickers or third-world military dictators. And I like that she does have an edge to her - unlike other DC heroes like Batman, Huntress kills!
It's not an amazing book and it does have some minor problems but it's a decent read that introduces a cool vigilante, dishing out justice against a beautiful Mediterranean backdrop (making a change from the Gotham gloom). Even though I have no idea what the crossroads of the title refers to. If you like stories featuring vigilantes taking down human traffickers, check out the much bloodier "Punisher MAX: The Slavers".
