About the Author
George J. Searles is a Professor of Arts & Humanities at Mohawk Valley Community College, specializing in journalism, business/technical writing, contemporary poetry, and Latin. He has also taught at Green Haven State Prison, Binghamton University (where he earned his Ph.D.), New York Institute of Technology, St. Elizabeth’s College of Nursing, Utica College of Syracuse University, and SUNY College of Technology, and on the graduate level for New School University. Currently he is an adjunct instructor of creative writing at Pratt Institute’s upstate campus at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica. He has served on the governing boards of both the Modern Language Association and the North East Modern Language Association, presenting scholarly papers at the annual conventions of those and other such professional organizations. In addition, he has served as a communications consultant to many corporate clients and social services agencies, as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation. Along with numerous articles, reviews, and poems in a broad range of popular and academic periodicals, he has published three volumes of literary criticism from university presses and five editions of Workplace Communications: The Basics, a Pearson textbook used on over 200 campuses here and abroad. The recipient of two SUNY Chancellor’s medals for excellence, he was named the Carnegie Foundation’s “New York State Professor of the Year” in 2002, and the New York State United Teachers’ “Higher Education Member of the Year” in 2003.

Great and Horrible Insights

This book is great for providing working examples and sticking with real exercises. It also is good for summarizing writing formats such as letters, memos, and reports and emphasizing the importance of knowing your audience. A early problem though is how outdated its views of workplaces can be. Often it advises passive-aggressive writing. In addition it places a hypercritical emphasis on workplace relations and hierarchy. Still, it provides some realistic sense of the work environment.

Fantastic!

I will be choosing the book to teach Technical Writing next fall. This is a wonderful book with a variety of clear examples, succinct text, helpful hints, checklists to double-check your work, and even MLA and APA research guidelines. For anyone that's interested in business reports, memos, resumes, cover letters, or research-based project proposals, this is an excellent text. It is far superior to texts that cost twice as much.

making it easy to read and navigate

Workplace Communications: The Basics by George J. Searles (Sixth Edition) is a common addition to many college writing courses. This book has turned out to be not only invaluable to me as a graduate student, but also has prepared me to excel with communications and even lesson planning in my job as a high school English teacher.
The contents of the book are presented in a straightforward manner. These basics begin with knowing and evaluating the purpose, audience, and tone of your workplace writing before moving on the specifics. Then, the chapters that follow are devoted to workplace correspondence, visuals, reports, summaries, fliers, brochures, and newsletters, instructions, resume writing, oral presentations, and proposals.
The book is written in a simple and conversational style, making it easy to read and navigate. It is an excellent book for the visual learner, as each chapter includes many samples and examples. The textbook ends with two appendixes on improving writing style and a review of grammar.
This book should belong on the bookshelves of all college students. It should be retained and valued as a key source to be used when transitioning to the work force.
