Heaven and Hell: The Psychology of the Emotions, by Neel Burton

Today more than ever, the education doled out in classrooms is cold and cognitive. But, once outside, it is our uneducated emotions that move us, hold us back, and lead us astray. It is, at first and at last, our emotions that determine our choice of profession, partner, and politics, and our relation to money, sex, and religion. Nothing can make us feel more alive, or more human, than our emotions, or hurt us more. Yet many people lumber through life without giving full consideration to their emotions, partly because our empirical, materialistic culture does not encourage it or even make it seem possible, and partly because it requires unusual strength to gaze into the abyss of our deepest drives, needs, and fears. This book proposes to do just that, examining over 25 emotions ranging from lust to love and humility to humiliation, and drawing some powerful and astonishing conclusions along the way.

Review
Burton is never short of an interesting and sharp judgment. --Prof Peter Toohey, Psychology Today

Each of us spends maybe 15 years or more in formal education. We are taught mathematics, chemistry, geography, history, and so on, but at no point are we taught anything about the emotions. 'Heaven and Hell' helps to redress the balance by educating our emotions... The book reminds us of the power and significance of our emotions, and that their influence is all-too-often overlooked. Each of the 29 chapters focuses on a particular emotion and discusses its origin, historical aspects and philosophy. The impact of each emotion, both negative and positive, is then addressed. Essentially, in relatively few pages, the reader's existing perception of an emotion is challenged as he or she develops further insight and understanding. The book does what it sets out to do: it makes you stop and think... 'Heaven and Hell' focuses on a subject that is relevant to all. It enables and encourages us to think differently and challenges our understanding of emotions we experience but do not really think about... a fascinating read. --British Medical Association Book Awards

Insightful, Instructive and Enjoyable
By Neiel Drain
This book is noteworthy on several counts, not least being the wealth of information it provides, and the manner it is presented including its thought provoking and challenging style. The opening remarks in the Preface highlight the neglect of the emotions by our system of education, and set the scene for the book. Its aim is to redress this balance. It is also stated the book is aimed at the general reader, with text that is clear and concise. This latter has been achieved to a remarkable degree. Of special note too, while Dr Burton states that the book does not purport to offer a comprehensive account of the psychology of the emotions, the breadth of the subject matter covered, and obvious depth of research, clearly indicate the author's comprehensive knowledge, incisive thinking and practical experience in his chosen subject. Most impressive are the references sourced, extracts from which enrich the book's contents. These are from some of the greatest philosophers, thinkers and writers of all time and their words of wisdom are very much brought to life. Derivation and root meanings of key words also add to the reader's knowledge and enjoyment. Although Dr Burton states he has adopted a rather loose definition of 'emotion', the twenty nine he lists are perhaps more than some readers might have expected. But that is not all; associated with our emotions are other related 'conditions' - traits, temperament, character, beliefs, to name just some, all of which contribute to what it means to be human. The defining of these latter and their association with the true emotions are well explained. Readers are certain to find much information that either is new to them or known only in part, but from which will be gained considerable knowledge and understanding of the emotions and the part they play in our general well-being. For some, this book may also be a journey of self-discovery, including providing fresh insights and answers to emotional issues at a personal level. Most importantly perhaps, for those who take seriously the wisdom, guidance and advice offered, the pitfalls leading to 'Hell' will more likely be avoided, and the joys and wonder offered by Heaven more easily grasped and experienced.

A Unique and Successful melange of Greek Philosophy, classical Christianity, and the new self help genre
By fhp911
Neel Burton's "Heaven and Hell: The Psychology of the Emotions" combines his unique perspective as a psychologist, interpreter and devotee of Plato and Aristotle, acute observer of modern life, and prolific author. The book is an overview of the precise definitions, distinctions, historical development and interconnections of 29 different "emotions". The book combines Greek Philosophy, classical Christianity, and the new self help genre as it seeks to unlock the essence of these different epiphenomenon of the human heart/mind. As such, Burton treats certain aspects of human behavior/cognition that would not usually be considered as emotions, such as kissing, altruism, depression, Sadomaschism, and boredom.

This expansive definition of the phenomenon of emotions allows Dr Burton to treat the whole range of human experience. This broad definition is exceedingly useful as Burton explains psychological dynamics behind male-female relationships in the Sadomasochism chapter that I found highly insightful. It also allows Burton to comment on the potentially adaptive/maladaptive components of conditions like depression and wonder/epiphany. These perspectives are positively genius and super interesting and make "Heaven and Hell" difficult to put down once you get into it.

Conversely, at times, Burton may stretch his theme too far and becomes slightly dogmatic in his approach. For example, I finished the book not convinced that kissing was a unique emotional expression even though I was very interested to learn that many pre-literate societies, including the ancient Romans, used kisses to seal oaths even between people of the same gender. A quirk/dogma of the book is Neel's obsession with telling us with the ancients thought about the emotion in particular and then counselling in a modern self-help fashion to adopt a view point on the given emotion in line with Plato or Aristotle's perspective but applied to 21st century conditions. This may be more useful in treating phenomenon like Pride and Nostolgia and less relevant in commenting on Depression, Boredom, and Anger.

In summation, if you are deeply thoughtful, introspective, and emotionally in-tune with yourself, and have a conservative bent you will find "Heaven and Hell" not only extremely readable and full of fascinating information but also possible useful in any attempt to better understand the human experience, enjoy life, and regain control of one's emotional life.

Fearless and probing - challenges our assumptions, expands our minds
By Charis Cheevers
As ever, Burton is elegant and humane in thought and style, with a level of engagement that effortlessly draws in the reader. His cool, questing wit is not shy of taking on the big subjects, as evinced not just by this book, which aims to redress the neglect of our emotions by our educational system and materialistic culture, but by his previous works such as The Meaning of Madness and The Art of Failure - The Anti-Self-Help Guide. In this book, Burton examines our emotions as the mainspring of our energy and creative lives, with a careful philosophical appraisal of the entire topic, making for example a careful distinction between passions, beliefs and desires. The author's scientific training forms a reliable basis to his creativity and vision, not to mention his sheer classical learning, with lavish knowledge of, for example, Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, Dante and Shakespeare. Covering 29 emotions, Burton ranges from the more traditionally negative emotions such as anger, lust and boredom and the fascinating more positive ones such as friendship, kissing and wonder, so often ignored by traditional psychology. This is a fine and original mind, with special qualifications to explore both to the heights and the depths. Burton himself puts it best: ‘It requires unusual strength to gaze into the abyss of our deepest drives, needs and fears.’ Just so. Would that every writer could make our shadow areas so illuminating.
