Technology is rapidly moving into our bodies,” writes cyber expert Keenan, and this book gives a chilling look ahead into where that road may lead us on a one way trip to the total surrender of privacy and the commoditization of intimacy.” Here is the definitive dissection of privacy-eroding and life-invading technologies, coming at you from governments, corporations, and the person next door.
Take, for example, Girls Around Me”: a Russian-made iPhone App that allowed anyone to scan the immediate vicinity for girls and women who checked in on Foursquare and had poorly secured Facebook profiles. It combined this information in a way never intended by the original poster. Going to a Disney theme park? Your creepy new MagicBand” will alert Minnie Mouse that you’re on the way and she’ll know your kid’s name when you approach her. Thinking about sending your DNA off to Ancestry.com for some genetic genealogy”? Perhaps you should think again: your genetic information could be used against you.
"This masterful weaving of the negatives and positives of technology makes for a book that is realistic about technology’s perils yet optimistic about it’s great potential.”Foreword Reviews

Review
"This book should be read by anyone who uses a smartphone, computer or other device connected to the internet. It won’t make you feel better, but at least you’ll know what you’re up against." Ron Jacobs, CounterPunch
"Keenan lays out the evidence calmly, methodically and without polemics: he lets the evidence speak for itself. This is not to say the book is devoid of humourfar from it! But his wit, like his politics, takes a back seat to the civil and civic-minded purpose of his endeavor."— The Rumpus
"This masterful weaving of the negatives and positives of technology makes for a book that is realistic about technology’s perils yet optimistic about it’s great potential.”—Barry Silverstein, Foreword Reviews

Both entertaining and terrifying from an honest expert on the subject of technology and modern day privacy.
By EVC
Mr. Keenan is a genius and does a public service by writing this book and providing his years of experience and wealth of knowledge to the public. This is an easy read that had me hooked right from the beginning. Prof. Keenan comes across as an especially honest expert in the realm of technology and its infringing invasion of privacy in areas many people probably wouldn't think twice about. This book is a real eye opener for the newly curious and also filled with insight about the modern day intrusions from a professional perspective most people will never have the opportunity to personally glimpse. I think everyone living in today's world would benefit from reading this book. I'm especially grateful for Mr. Keenan's revelations and pertinent suggestions for maintaining one's privacy provided in the book.

Tangible, sometimes shocking, a read well worth your time.
By Virah Vocah
Thomas Keenan—computer programmer, professor, author, and journalist—has a history in predicting future crimes and technologies. More than twenty years ago he predicted the modern day prevalence of identity theft, organ smuggling, and even some fringe technologies such as wireheading. He writes with an obvious belief in the constant advance of technology, optimistically predicting invention after invention without expertise in the direct fields of research. Yet this does not detract from the book’s verisimilitude, due to the immediacy of his references.
In fact, one of the most impressive aspects of the book is its modernity and authenticity—in every subject Keenan touches, whether it be biotechnology, pet care, or surveillance, Keenan illustrates our loss of privacy with material examples from present day problems and solutions. The only possible way to read this book is to keep a handy search engine ready to identify and explore the different technologies to which he alludes. That being said, while the content and consistent personal tone of the book warrant praise, Keenan’s lack of organization and thematic progression may concern and distract the analytical reader. Chapters (each covering a different style of creepy) loosely transition from one to another with a quick paragraph or sentence, leaving no warning signs for the eventual destination.
This stream of consciousness writing eventually ends with three main points: technology’s ability to collect information on us is both powerful and cheap, the motivation to use this is greater than ever before, and individuals guard their privacy in different amounts. The first cannot be argued against—his entire book speaks to the influence of technology and how vulnerable our personal lives are to it. However, he does not present any convincing reasons for the second conclusion, never acknowledging humanity’s long history of selfishness (resulting in violations of privacy) nor offering any reasons as to why there are more motives to spy on others now. The third I must agree with, and its implications motivate my recommendation for the book: we must become aware of the potential dangers of these new technologies in order to guard against the oncoming privacy singularity.

Excellent description of technocreep and how to protect yourself
By Godo Stoyke
In his book, Prof. Keenan covers everything from government invasion of our privacy, commercial accumulation of data records on everyone who uses the internet (or customer cards, or ...), to how we contribute to our own data files through social media. Of particular interest is also the chapter on the proliferation of video cameras and the increasing ability of software to recognize your face, and what you can do about it. Would have been nice to have an index to keywords at the back of the book. I liked the continuous references, rather than broken up into chapters and renumbered separately as found in most books, as this makes it much easier to find the reference you are looking for. Keenan recommends software you can use to track the trackers. While I was aware that my website usage is being logged by commercial entities, it was still amazing to see (and identify by name) 89 companies that were logging my internet use within 10 minutes after visiting only four websites. Apart from discussing how we as a society can deal with privacy issues, the chapter on "Anti-Creep" is probably one of the most important if you want to reduce your vulnerabilities.
